It's Soul, Covered Up Part 7

Image
For this 7th part of ' (It's) Soul Covered (Up) ' I again selected cover versions that sound at least as good or even better than the originals! Artists like Prince, the Stylistics and Bryan Ferry made some very nice covers themselves, but their self-penned songs were reinterpreted as well, as shown in this seventh edition. 'Is you love strong enough' from Bryan Ferry for instance was originally written for the movie 'Legend' (starring Tom Cruise) and the cover version that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross made was used for 'The girl with the dragon tattoo' (starring Daniel Craig) that came out last year. Mayer Hawthorne (picture) visited my home town a couple of weeks ago. The track from Sugardaddy is taken from the new compilation album ‘ LateNightTales: Music for pleasure ', which is mixed by Tom Findlay (Groove Armada). More on covers and originals on Second Hand Songs and Originals . Enjoy! Tracklist (in parentheses the originals): Susa

Funky Chillin' On The West Coast

Image
Tomorrow it will officially be summer and these tracks about California give me the right summer feeling, It's the music I'd like to hear when I'd take a ride to the West Coast on a sunny day with the radio on. But I'm not used to driving a car, I've never been to California and I don't have the money to buy an airplane ticket from the Netherlands to the US, so I don't think this will happen very often... Perhaps I should say instead that it's the music that makes me happy. It's a collection of relaxed tunes that makes you feel like being in California. The songs have a sunny feeling most of the times, but with a few dark clouds as well . It would have been the perfect soundtrack to the movie ‘ Flashbacks of a fool ’. And if you like this kind of (blue eyed) soul music, check out the excellent chill album ‘ LateNightTales: Music for pleasure ', which is mixed by Tom Findlay from Groove Armada. Enjoy! Rainy Days And Mondays

This weather forecast is introduced by an expert, the one and only Prince Charles! :-) Keeping it in the royal family, so from Prince Charles to Carole King is a small step... ;-) Two of the songs are compositions from Carole King (Crying In The Rain and It Might As Well Rain Until September). King was most of all a songwriter in the 1960s, before she became successful as a singer-songwriter in the 1970s. Together with then husband Gerry Goffin she wrote songs for The Drifters, The Righteous Brothers, their babysitter Little Eva and quite a few girl groups (who would influence Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse later on). Carole King made demos of her songs, so the performing artists would know how the compositions should sound. Those 'legendary demos' are available on cd now and they sometimes sound better than the recorded versions! Carole King gives the songs a softness and a sensitive touch that makes them deeper and richer. Enjoy! Picture below from Ivan Kobyakov . Tracklis

A Soulful Trip To Paradise

First of all al little bit of Q&A to introduce this funky chill mix... Question: What the f*** is funky chill? Answer: My dj style is hard to describe, but I often call it 'funky chill'. I play relaxed dance music with its foundation in the 1970s and early 1980s. It's a melting pot of soul, disco, funk, jazz, folk, psychedelic and all the genres in between. Perhaps I should say: this is the music that makes me happy, a collection of chilled out tunes compiled by a guy in his forties. These are songs for listeners who like to nod their heads to the beat in stead of nervously moving their legs... ;-) Enjoy! Tracklist: Ray Barretto – Pastime Paradise (1980) The O'Jays – Paradise (1976) Second Image – Paradise (1985) Peabo Bryson – Paradise (1980) Minnie Riperton – Adventures In Paradise (1975) Maxine Weldon – I'll Build A Stairway To Paradise (1975) Black – Paradise (1987) Lana Del Rey – Dark Paradise (2012) Peter Jay – Paradise Garden (1960) Pa

A Night With The Professor

Image
All songs are about going out, getting down, making love and having fun in the small hours! So let's enjoy this night with the professor... ;-) Beautiful picture on the left from Julia Fuchs . Tracks and linernotes: Frank McDonald – Night Moves (1978) I don't know anything about Mr. McDonald. I read somewhere that he had worked with Mike Batt (Katie Melua), but this is a very nice jazz-funk track from the late seventies. Soulpersona Feat. Princess Freesia – Last Night (2011) Soulpersona and Princess Freesia team up again for a great track. Princess Freesia is working on her official debut album ('The rainbow ride') that comes out later this year. She released her early work on 'The hoxxxy demos' in February. Neville Brothers – In The Still Of The Night (1990) This is from the album 'Red Hot + Blue' that was the first in the Red Hot Benefit Series. It features contemporary pop performers reinterpreting several songs of Cole Porter and th
