West Coast Sundown: Yacht Rock, Late Night Pop & Sunset Soul

Image
Unsplash Enjoy the soundtrack to a West Coast sundown! 😊 The closing track by Matt Duncan is brand new, by the way. It sounds like a lost recording from The Nightfly sessions by Donald Fagen. At the time critics sometimes called David Cassidy’s music bubblegum pop. That was simply defined  music manufactured to sell as much records as possible and it was mostly aimed at a very young audience. Bubblegum's classic period ran from the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies. At that point disco music took over the single market. However, David Cassidy certainly made some very good records, although in later years he found it difficult to shake off his teen idol image. “His wispiest, breathiest hit was called ‘I Am A Clown’. Poor, sweet, forlorn sexy David – marshmallows could’ve bruised this sound.“ (Bob Stanley in his book Yeah Yeah Yeah )  Midas Shadow by Al Stewart is from his classic 1976 album The Year Of The Cat . The message of this song is that when a successful businessman ...

Smooth Sailing: Adult Rock & Autumn Gold

Image
C-Heads Magazine Enjoy the sundown during this smooth sailing trip on a beautiful autumn evening! Although a magnificent singer and nominated for a Tony award, the career of Phyllis Hyman never blossomed. She had a troubled relationship with her record company Arista, because of artistic differences and a controversial nude photoshoot for Oui Magazine in 1982. She also had to deal with some mental problems. She suffered from bipolar disorder and depression for years, having been diagnosed in the 1980s. She also struggled with an alcohol and drugs addiction. The singer died by suicide on June 30, 1995.  “While she never attained a pop hit or went gold, no list of the best soul ballads, quiet storm deep cuts, or disco singles is complete without Hyman's impeccably rich voice.” (Allmusic.com) Next up is a new part of Mellow Mellow FM , followed by a Mixcloud Exclusiv e . Tracklist: Ronney Abramson – Light Up Your Love (1978) Phyllis Hyman – Be Careful (1978) Jussi Halme – Autumn G...

Best Of 70s Soul: Love To The World

Image
Bring a little bit of love to the world, to quote LTD! :-) Enjoy this new episode of Best Of 70s Soul . William DeVaughn had a daytime job as a civil servant, when he wrote a song called A Cadillac Don't Come Easy , which was eventually re-written to become Be Thankful For What You Got , in 1972. He spent all his savings to buy studio time to get it recorded. Luckily he got in touch with producer John Davis of Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, used by Philadelphia International Records. The session featured the core members of the famous MFSB group: guitarists Norman Harris and Bobby Eli, drummer Earl Young, vibraphonist Vince Montana and percussionist Larry Washington. Allan Felder developed the separate ad-lib back-up chorus with his sister's vocal group. John Davis played keyboards on the track. Frank Fioravanti, the executive producer and co-ordinator, secured the song's release on Roxbury Records, a subsidiary of Chelsea Records, run by industry veteran Wes Farre...

Eddy’s 80s Grooves part 25: On The Beat

Image
Again music from and inspired by the 1980s! The tracks by Beverly Girl and Chromeo were released last week. Enjoy this new episode of Eddy's 80s Grooves ! When singer Phyllis Hyman (picture) had completed her LP Sing a Song in 1978 and readied it for release, her record company Buddah went bankrupt and was taken over by Arista. Head of office Clive Davis labelled Sing a Song “uncommercial”. The album was scrapped and released as the retooled Somewhere in My Lifetime the same year. In the meantime she recorded You Know How to Love Me . It became Phyllis Hyman's most successful album and was carefully tailored to become the artist's crossover breakthrough, with prolific producer/songwriters James Mtume and Reggie Lucas (who recently passed away) on board. One of the following albums was Can’t We Fall in Love Again , which contained You Sure Look Good to Me , a little bit reminiscent of the Pointer Sisters' hit He's So Shy . Although Phyllis Hyman was very succes...
