Latin Moves From Old Grooves

Image
Unsplash Enjoy familiar songs in a comfortable Latin jacket. The warm sounds fit these warm days of summer 😎   Probably the first one who made Latin versions of well-known songs was German composer, musician and producer Uwe Schmidt, also known as Señor Coconut. Meant to be rough sketches, Uwe Schmidt started to program a couple of Kraftwerk cover versions in traditional cha-cha-cha arrangement and decided to make this the second Señor Coconut album. Entertained by the result of the first recordings, he produced a total of 4 songs which he sent to some record companies. One of those, Tōwa Tei's Akashic Records, immediately licensed the album, entitled El Baile Alemán , releasing it upon completion of the production in 2000. Uwe Schmidt obtained official permission by Kraftwerk themselves to release the album, though had to remove his version of Radioactivity . European and North American record companies remained uninterested until triggered by the hype El Baile Alemán had c...

Chillout In A Warm Latin Breeze

Image
Ahmet Cotur Enjoy familiar songs in a comfortable Latin jacket. Warm sounds for warm days! 😊 One of the first bands that recreated classic songs in a Latin arrangement was Nouvelle Vague. Their name, "new wave" in French, referred to the new wave music that they covered and to the French New Wave cinema movement of the 1960s. They often reworked songs in a “bossa nova” style, which means "new wave" in Portuguese. Explaining how the project came about, band member Olivier Libaux later told the BBC: "Marc Collin and I were both musicians and producers in the French music industry when, in 2003, Marc called me with this very strange idea of covering Love Will Tear Us Apart in a bossa nova version. I thought this idea was absolutely crazy but very exciting. So we decided to get into the studio and try it out as soon as possible." Olivier Libaux passed away in 2021. Back From Rio

Image
Yes, I’m back from my (imaginary) trip to Rio! ;-) .  ‘Back from Rio’ is mixed in 115 BPM. The title is inspired by an album from Roger McGuinn, the singer of the legendary rock band The Byrds. Twenty years ago he made a very nice solo album that was called ‘Back fron Rio’, although there wasn’t any Latin song on it. I liked the title, so I used it for this mix. It’s meant to warm you up for the world championship soccer and the Olympic Games that will be held in Rio de Janeiro in a few years’ time. By the way, not all of the songs are South American, some of them have a Cuban background as well.  Enjoy! Tracklist: Donald Fagen – The Goodbye Look (1983) Bachman-Turner Overdrive – Looking Out For Number 1 (1975) Alice Smith & Aloe Blacc – Baby (2011) Zuco 103 – Espero (2008) Gretchen Parlato – On The Other Side (2009) Fania All Stars – Picadillo (1976) Sergent Garcia – Yo Soy Salsamuffin (2011) Snowboy And The Latin Section – Snowboy’s Special (2008) John...
