C-Heads Magazine This week we will sail along the Dutch West Coast and play some AOR, yacht rock & polder pop from the Netherlands. A lot of Dutch bands and musicians were influenced by the late seventies/early eighties West Coast sound, like so many artists elsewhere. “Perfect sitting down dancing music”, according to Questlove in an upcoming HBO documentary about yacht rock. In 1974 successful Dutch band The Cats went to L.A. to record Love In Your Eyes with the best West Coast musicians around in those days, like keyboard player/producer Michael Omartian (Christopher Cross). Be My Day from the album became a number one hit in the Netherlands and reached the 18th position on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. A year later they again went to L.A. and made an album with Jeff Porcaro, David Foster and Larry Carlton as first class musicians. So no wonder that the West Coast sound was flourishing those days! The Keane Brothers were a duo of teen brothers from L.A. who released four albums and briefly hosted a television variety show on CBS. DJ Supermarkt wants You’re Running Away , produced by David Foster and Lamont Dozier, from their album Taking Off , on one of his future Too Slow To Disco compilations. The problem is that he has not been able to get it licensed yet. The rights are not clear, according to Universal, the owner of ABC Records. DJ Supermarkt will perform in my home town Groningen on the 13th of September, by the way. He will be one of the acts during the Rooftop Sessions at Forum Groningen. With her strong, distinctive alto, she turned out to be an outstanding interpreter of jazzy soul ballads. Between 1978 and 1984, Bofill had consistent success on the American soul charts, with six albums making the Top 40, including two that entered the top ten. During this period, seven of her singles reached the Billboard R&B Top 40 as well. Bofill’s career went downhill after 1984. She was then dropped by her record company Arista in favour of Whitney Houston, who could conquer the pop market as well. In 2006 and 2007 Angela Bofill suffered two strokes. Because she had no health insurance, a benefit concert was organized to pay her hospital bills. Ginny Come Lately (originally by Brian Hyland) was his first solo hit single in 1973, after he had left his band The Shuffles. It was a hit single in Austria as well. In 1986, he collaborated with American singer/songwriter Albert Hammond on a successful album called Hammond & West . They first recorded Give A Little Love , which would be covered by Aswad, Ziggy Marley and Bucks Fizz. The song was composed by then relatively unknown songwriter Dianne Warren, who would later write songs for all the big stars, as you can find on Wikipedia.
