Mellow Mellow FM Radio: I Remember Yesterday

Image
Enjoy this new episode of Mellow Mellow FM Radio ! What to expect? Forgotten pop songs, jingles and radio fragments from the past, but some of the tracks are brand new, like the one from the Blossoms. They know how to combine disco, yacht rock and indie pop perfectly. Their album Foolish Loving Spaces came out last week. I Remember Yesterday was Giorgio Moroder's second concept album for Donna Summer. The songs represented different times, such as the 1940s, right up to the 1970s. All were sung on microphones from their respective eras. Finally, I Feel Love was meant to be the sound of the future and that is exactly what it became. Big Mouth from Dutch duo Mouth & MacNeal (their How Do You Do went to #8 on Billboard in 1972) once said that he drank a lot, but that there were two people who could drink even more. The first one was Noddy Holder from glam rock band Slade and the other one was the Greek giant Demis Roussos, former singer of prog rock band Aphrodite’s Child....

Smooth Sailing: Slow Disco, Mellow Soul & Folk Funk

Joan Smalls The opening track, Cafe Tropical from Ukraine's Vincent Inc and regular collaborator Lola Allen is an extraordinaire slow disco track, complete with laidback guitar that echoes seventies jazz-funk, easy listening-styled voices and on top of that a gloriously cheesy eighties sax line to finish it off. Who? by Odyssey is a ‘one single only’ disco project from Greek synthesizer player and movie composer Vangelis Papathanassiou ( Chariots of fire ), who is also known for his work with Aphrodite’s Child. Former singer of that band, Demis Roussos, sang this song as well a couple of years later. He called it I dig you . The guys from Odyssey make it a vulnerable disco song, but Demis did it with more self-confidence and power, which gave the song a totally different meaning. Enjoy this new sunny part of Smooth Sailing ! Tracklist: Vincent Inc & Lola Allen – CafĆ© Tropical (2019) Donna Summer – State Of Independence (1982) Alessi – Jagged Edge (1982) Ia...

Soul Searching

Yes, that’s me, Professor Eddy, on the left spinning some records. The guy on the right is Daan from the excellent cool jazz dj-act Swoolish . 'Soul Searching' was the show I used to host for Laid Back Radio. Every now and then I was a guest dj for Laid Back on FM Brussels as well. Last summer I played the Dimitri from Paris remix of ‘Love is’ from the big Greek Demis Roussos. It was his new single at the time. Demis Roussos was a much in demand disco star at the Loft, one of most popular clubs in NYC back in the day. Those disco singles never became chart successes at the other side of the ocean. People in Europe couldn't imagine the not so tiny Demis as a dancing disco star, as he wanted us to believe in his lyrics. One of his best selling songs in the Netherlands was the Mediterranean sounding ‘My friend the wind’, but 'L.O.V.E. got a hold on me' (written by the guys behind the classic 'I will survive) is way more precious to me. You can hear the album vers...
