C-Heads Magazine This cloudcast was made after I had heard an excellent mixtape from Paris based electro/disco producer Breakbot (Thibaut Berland). He initially made a name for himself with a remix of Justice's Let There Be Light in 2006. In the following years he reworked tracks from Digitalism, Sebastien Tellier, Röyksopp, among many others. After Breakbot had signed with Ed Banger Records, he made his label debut with Baby I'm Yours 8 years ago, followed by numerous other great tracks, like Break of Dawn , One Out of Two and Another You . Earlier this year singer Cuba Gooding, father of the actor Cuba Gooding Jr., was found dead in his car. Cuba Gooding Sr. joined The Main Ingredient in 1971 when then lead singer Donald McPherson died unexpectedly of leukemia. He had served as a backing vocalist on some of their recordings. While he was the lead singer of the band, The Main Ingredient scored five top 10 hits on the Billboard R&B chart. Their highest-charting effort was "Everybody Plays the Fool," which peaked at No. 2 for three weeks in 1972. The track also was their biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart, climbing to number 3. The Gooding-led act also reached top 10s on the Hot R&B Songs chart with "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely," "Happiness Is Just Around the Bend" and "Rolling Down a Mountainside." This series is the up-tempo, danceable variant of Groovy, Sexy & Soulful: soul that supposes to bring more excitement on the dance floor than in the bedroom. When disco became popular around the mid-seventies, many soul artists, like Temptations singer David Ruffin, moved into this direction, which seemed a natural step forward. But by the end of the decade all of a sudden models like Grace Jones and Amanda Lear were the real disco stars. The latter was the muse of painter Pablo Picasso and former girlfriend of Roxy Music front man Bryan Ferry, who became infected with the disco virus as well. The song from the Manhattans on this third part of Steamy Soul Funk & Disco is another small tribute to the late Vincent Montana, who plays the vibes on this Philly track. It is produced by Bobby Martin, featuring Gerald Alston on lead vocals. Taken from their album ‘That’s how much I love you’ that was released on Columbia Records. Tommy Good was a singer in local clubs around Detroit when Motown boss Berry Gordy contracted him. He was one of the first white employees of the famous soul factory. He recorded an album, but for some strange reason it was never released at the time. It stayed in the vaults for almost 40 years! I don’t know why, because 'I've gotta get away' is an extremely good song. When I finished this mix I realized there were a lot of trumpet players in it (Herb Alpert, Eddie Henderson, Tom Browne), which makes this 'steamy' mix, even more steamy! One of the most outstanding funky tracks on this second part of 'Steamy Soul Funk & Disco' is ‘Soul train’ from Little Richard. This is what Derek’s Daily 45s has to say about it: "Even though Little Richard's career never recovered commercially after his abrupt departure from the music business in 1957, the man cut some of the hottest wax of his career during the 1966-1968 period (including the incredible "I Need Love")." I’m really fond of soul music in which the disco feeling shines through. So this is a mixture of funky soul and early disco. Tracks in which you can hear the transition from soul to disco in particular are ‘Queen for a day’ by American Gypsy (who lived and recorded in Holland) and the wonderful song by Philly Devotions, ‘I just can’t say goodbye’ (which I first heard on ‘Super disco friends’ by Dimitri From Paris).
