Six years ago Charles Maurice (aka Pascal Rioux) started his AOR Global Sounds series to share his long time love for yacht rock of the late 1970s and early 1980s. On the soon to be released 5th volume, he again selected AOR and West Coast gems from independent labels, like the track from Rhapsody, which is on this cloudcast. Released in March 1977, Easy by The Commodores reached number one on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is a slow ballad about a man's emotions at the end of a relationship. Singer Lionel Richie states that he is not depressed about the break-up and claims that he feels " easy like Sunday morning ". Jonathan Coulton did a good job to sound exactly like the original. They became famous for the Norman Whitfield-produced soundtrack to the Richard Pryor movie Car Was h. With its hand-clapping, funky intro, exciting vocals and the band's great performance, the title track became one of the biggest disco songs ever, leaping to #1 on the pop and soul charts. The hand claps at the beginning have been sampled many times by a variety of hip-hop and R&B artists. In 2004 a cover version by Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott, was released as the single for the Shark Tales soundtrack. It reached the Top 5 in the UK but only #63 in the States. He also paved the way for the Beatles in the United States by recording their song From Me To You in 1963. At first John Lennon was flattered when Del Shannon told him about the idea, but he quickly changed his mind. He was aware that a cover version by Del Shannon might hurt the Beatles’ chances of having a hit with From Me To You in America. Although struggling with alcoholism and being manic-depressive, Del Shannon still managed to pursue a long-lasting career, despite having no big hits after 1965 (he had some minor successes afterwards, like Runaway '67 in 1967 and Sea Of Love in 1980).
