Image
Unsplash In the 1970s many artists were influenced by disco, the main musical genre at the time. They used disco elements or made 100% disco tracks. Even British sixties pop group The Hollies released a song that became extremely popular at legendary NYC discotheque The Loft, just like L.O.V.E. Got A Hold On Me from former prog rock singer Demis Roussos. Enjoy this exclusive one for Mixcloud subscribers and Boogie Bunker Radio listeners only! Mellow Mellow FM: 80s Smooth Jazz, Soul & Sophisti-Pop

Image
Unsplash Let’s step into Martin McFly’s DeLorean and drive straight into the 1980s! 😊 British band ABC reinvented themselves several times in the 1980s. After making consecutively a bombastic pop, a rock and an electro pop album and prior to their move into house in 1989, the band released Alphabet City . Before the soul pop album saw the light of day, the only two remaining members, Martin Fry and Mark White, released the single When Smokey Sings in the summer of 1987. The song was a major success on the charts, reaching number 5 in the U.S. and number 11 in the U.K and the Netherlands. Their tribute to Motown legend Smokey Robinson would become their biggest hit ever. Singer and main composer Martin Fry still performs as ABC on retro festivals and occasionally releases new material. Enjoy this eighties show on Mellow Mellow FM ! Next up on Thursday is a new part of Smooth Sailing . Tracklist: George Benson – Give Me The Night (1980) Billy Preston – I'd Like To Go Back Ho

Summer Breezes, Slow Dances & That Soft Disco Sound

Image
Unsplash “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.” Just waiting for the summer breezes to arrive, like William Shakespeare did many years ago. Enjoy! The sister duo of Aly & AJ made a string of excellent electro pop singles and EPs the last decade, but on their new album they have “switched gears and adopted a sound that owed far more to the laid back '70s sound of California than the icy textures of London circa 1985.” (Allmusic) Next up is an eighties show on Mellow Mellow FM ! Tracklist: Ray Barretto – Summer Sun (1978) Cate Brothers – Travelin’ Man (1976) Valentine Brothers – King Size Bed (1979) Dick Bakker Orchestra – Introduction (That Soft Disco Sound) (1978) Debbie Taylor ‎– I Have Learned To Do Without You (1973) Maxine Weldon – Make It With You (1971) The Waters – What Am I Doing Wrong? (1977) Mud – All I’ve Got To Give (1976)

Soulful Side Of Yacht by The Smooth Operators

Image
Clarky Boy Inspired by the upcoming Yacht Soul: Covers episode of Too Slow To Disco, The Smooth Operators (Martijn Soetens and Professor Eddy) dug for the best soul covers of yacht rock they could find. In a way, yacht rock was a soulful variant of Westcoast pop/rock. It was mostly played by blue-eyed-soul artists, like The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and Hall & Oates. Because of the soulfulness of yacht rock, quite a few R&B artists covered these West Coast pop songs and they did it in an even more soulful way. "Two worlds, paying their debts and respects to each other, in a series of brilliant covers that just jump out of the speakers.” (Too Slow To Disco) Tracklist: Groove Theory – Hello It’s Me (1995) Eliot Kennedy – A Love Of Your Own (2021) Rumer – Sailing (2014) Dianne Reeves – Dreams (2013) Queen Latifah ‎– I’m Not In Love (2007) The Main Ingredient – Summer Breeze (1974) Patrice Rushen – Sweetest Taboo (1997) John Edwards – Tin Man (1973) Dee Dee Sharp G
