Rapture: Followers And Originators

Image
When I have a hip hop or R&B record in my hands, I always look at the samples that are used. If the samples are good, the record must be good. That’s more or less my philosophy. I started to play around with this thought and tried to put the original (the sampled track) and the derivative (mostly hip hop) back to back. Some kind of history lesson, so to speak. It starts with the roots, of course. Enjoy! Tracklist: Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Fiv e - Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel (1981) Chic – Good Times (1979) Sugarhill Gang – Rapper’s Delight (1979) Blondie – Rapture (1980) Love Unlimited – Love’s Theme (1974) O.M.D. – Dream Of Me (Based On Love's Theme) (1993) Montell Jordan - I Like (1996) KC & The Sunshine Band – I Get Lifted (1978) Q-Tip – Won’t Trade (2008) Ruby Andrews - You Made A Believer (Out Of Me) (1969) Average White Band – School Boy Crush [Eddy’s Edit] (1975) Erik B. & Rakim – Microphone Fiend (1988)

Summer Soul Station

Image
These are the songs I’d like to hear on the radio when I’m on a tropical beach with a drink in my hand, watching the ladies… ;-) To catch that feeling there are a few radio songs in this mix, like Donna Summer’s ‘On the radio’ and ‘Oh yeah’ from Roxy Music. And to give you the right summer feeling I put in quite a few tracks with a Latin vibe, like the ones from Leon Ware, George Duke and Johnny Alf. And the queen of bossa nova, the one and only girl from Ipanema, Astrud Gilberto, is in it as well, teaming up with George Michael this time. Enjoy Summer Soul Station ! Sea Groove

Let me take you on a Latin Soul trip this time! Hopefully this mix gives you the feeling of taking a well-deserved trip around the Caribbean. It summarizes more or less 50 years of summer fun in modern music. Enjoy the sea grooves! By the way, I did something similar for the Love Unlimited Sound System two years ago, called Latin Polar Bear Disco . Tracklist: Joe Cuba Sextet – Aprieta (1964) Orgone - Funky Nassau (2004) Sunlightsquare – Pastime Paradise (2009) Beverlei Brown – In The Summertime (2002) Julie Dexter & Khari Simmons – Salt Sea (2006) Buscemi – Seaside (2003) Incognito – That's The Way Of The World [Ski Oakenfull Remix] (2007) Odyssey – Don’t Tell Me, Tell Her (1980) Steve Parks – Movin' In The Right Direction (1981) Edna Wright – Oops! I'm A Mellow Fellow

Image
The lyrics are a complete mystery to me (I hear some vague religious themes), but when I first heard ‘Angels of ashes’ from Scott Walker I was sure that I saw a glimpse of heaven! What a voice, what a song! And the religous themes in it sound perfect on this sunny Sunday morning with some church bells sounding in the background. Tracklist: Major Harris – Loving You Is Mellow (1975) Patrice Rushen – Hang It Up (1978) Gladys Knight & the Pips – Who Is She (And What Is She To You) (1973) Hummingbird – You Can’t Hide Love (1977) Scott Walker – Angels Of Ashes (1969) Marlena Shaw – Last Tango In Paris (1973) Stanley Clarke / Howard Hewitt – Heaven Sent You (1984) Leela James – Party All Night (2010) Charles Drain – Is This Really Love (1976) Earth, Wind & Fire – Feeling Blue (1974) Rena Scott – Touch The Love In Your Heart (1979) Gene Dunlap – In Just A Matter Of Time (1983) The Stylistics – Broken Wing (1979) Commodores – Sail On (1979) Manhattans – Shin

Sun, Soul & Sadness

Image
I like the summer and the sunshine, but the sunset after a warm day always gives me a sad feeling for some reason. To deal with those feelings I created this mix. One of the tracks is ‘ Sundown ’, the classic from Gordon Lightfoot. And one of the comments on YouTube was this one: "Think of all the great songs we'd never have if Gordon's first wife hadn't been such a bitch!" Gordon Lightfoot also wrote the wonderful ‘If you could me read my mind’ that became a disco hit for Viola Wills in 1980. Tracklist: Incognito – Sunburn (1981) Brenton Wood – Better Believe It (1975) Johnny Bristol – Strangers In The Dark Corners (1978) Faze-O – Riding High (1977) Joan Osborne – I’ve Got To Use My Imagination (2007) Minnie Riperton – Perfect Angel (1974) Evelyn King – I’m Just Warming Up (1981) Tavares – Turn Out The Nightlight (1981) Don Blackman – Heart’s Desire (1982) T-Connection – Everything Is Cool (1982) Gentle Persuasion – A Little Bit Of Love (1
