Easter Disco Parade

Image
‘Rise’ is probably the most appropriate song to start this Easter Disco Parade with! It’s followed by some classic (underground) disco and towards the end there’s a little bit of free styling with a track from ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ by Yvonne Elliman. By the way, I selected 33 songs, because Jesus died at age 33 (and the mix lasts two hours and 33 minutes...). I chose to play two songs from Giorgio Moroder , who is lending a helping hand on the new Daft Punk album. He celebrates his birthday next month. This is what Baron von Luxxury wrote about disco pioneer Giorgio on his birthday, 26th of April, last year: “Giorgio Moroder was the first producer to blend driving dance beats, sequenced synths and the heart and soul of disco and give it all a pop sheen. He and Kraftwerk invented electronic music, and while the latter’s influence is undeniable in hip-hop and electropop, it is impossible to listen to any modern dance music and not hear nearly all of Moroder’s pioneering sounds and p

Groovy, Sexy & Soulful Part 22 Magic Edition

Image
Part 22 of the series is all about magic! I like the voice of Johnny Bristol (picture), ever since I saw him performing his biggest chart success ' Hang on in there, baby ' on Toppop in 1974. It was his first single for MGM as a solo artist and written with Barry White in mind. It reached number two on the American R&B chart and number eight pop that year. He also recorded the original version of ‘Love Me for a Reason’, later on major hits for The Osmonds and Boyzone. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1975 for Best New Artist, ultimately losing out to Marvin Hamlisch. For many years though Bristol (born in 1939, just like my father) was professionally and personally part of Motown, as he married Iris Gordy. He was also Harvey Fuqua's writing and production partner for several years. Their work includes Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ (1967), Edwin Starr’s ’25 Miles’ (1969), Jr. Walker & the All-Stars’ ‘What Does It Take’ (196

Soul Lounge From The Capitol Vaults

Image
Soul lounge from the Capitol label (founded in 1942) and affiliated labels, like Blue Note, Stateside and United Artists. What better words to hear than ‘Watchin' winter turn to spring’ from ‘Feel like making love’? And happy birthday to Bobby Womack, who turned 69 last week. This mix also pays tribute to Donald Byrd, who passed away February 4. This is what Pat Les Stache wrote on his blog about this jazz legend: “During the late sixties and seventies, the trumpeter moved away from the hard-bop sound and delved into fusion and soul-jazz, hooking up with legendary jazz-funk production tag-team the Mizell brothers (Larry & Fonce Mizell) to release some of the best recordings of that sub-genre." Tracklist: José James – No Beginning, No End (2013) Marlena Shaw – Feel Like Making Love (1976) Nancy Wilson – Ain’t No Sunshine (1971) Buscemi – Welcome To The Mile High Club (2012) Donald Byrd – Wind Parade [King Most’s Dub ‘Em Down Redirection] (2012) Madlib – Stepp

Groovy, Sexy & Soulful Part 21 Dirty Edition

Image
Again seductive female and soulful maile voices in part 21 of Groovy, Sexy & Soulful ! One of the best albums of the moment is ‘More’ from Belgian two man band Soldout . To be honest, I was first attracted by the album cover art work (picture), but the music is very exciting as well! Their new single is called ' 94 '. And this is the full version of the new single from Mirror Kisses: ' Runaways '. In Holland winter is returning and that’s why I selected ‘ Sonnentanz ' ('Sundance') from Austrians Klangkarussell. Hopefully it will bring back the sun... Next time I again will dig up some classic soul from the Capitol vaults, just like a few weeks ago. Enjoy! Tracklist: Michael Nesmith – Capsule [DJ Supermarkt Lazy Softrock Disco Jam Edit] (1979) Rance Allen Group – Reason To Survive [Pied Piper Edit] (1977) Sister Sledge – Let's Go On Vacation (1980) Glass Candy ‎– Geto Boys (2009) Puff – (You Got Me) In The Mood (1979) Terri Jones

A Soulful Soundtrack

Image
After seeing two superb movies, Silver Linings Playbook with Oscar winning actor Jennifer Lawrence (picture) and Flight with Oscar nominated actor Denzel Washington, I got inspired to create this mix. All of the tracks have big parts in movies, although the male character in Silver Linings Playbook, played by Bradley Cooper, hates ‘My Cherie Amour’ from Stevie Wonder… It’s nice to see Denzel Washington putting in a tape and listening to ‘Ain’t no sunshine’ from Bill Withers in Flight (don't see that movie if you have a fear of flying...). Enjoy! Tracklist ( in parentheses the names of the original soundtracks ): John Legend – Who Did That To You? (Django Unchained) (2012) Minnie Riperton – Inside My Love (Jackie Brown) (1975) Johnny ‘Hammond’ Smith – Soul Talk 1970 (Soul Kitchen) (1969) Bill Withers – Ain't No Sunshine (Flight) (1971) Marvin Gaye – Cleo’s Apartment (Trouble Man) (1972) Marvin Gaye – Trouble Man (Trouble Man) (1972) Marlena Shaw – Last Tang
