Professor Mellow Presents Funky Chill Grooves

Funky chill grooves for chilly autumn evenings. Special attention for one of the best Motown remixes ever, done by a certain guy called Professor Eddy… ;-) It’s a rework of ‘Falling in love again’ by Marvin Gaye, from his excellent album ‘Here, my dear’ that was dedicated to his ex-wife Anna Gordy (sister of Motown boss Berry Gordy). To support her financially Marvin and Anna agreed on giving her the royalties of the album. But that was a mistake, because the album didn’t sell at all. And Anna was furious when she heard the lyrics. They were all about their relationship and their legal battle afterwards. His career was slipping through his fingers and eventually Marvin Gaye ended up broke in Oostende (Belgium). Nowadays it’s really a mystery why the album wasn’t a success, because it’s one of his best records.

I added a different beat to ‘Falling in love again’, some keyboards and a few other things. I stayed as close to the original as possible, because it’s such a good track. The remix opens my latest contribution to Mixcloud: 'Professor Mellow Presents Funky Chill Grooves'.

You can hear two compositions from French bad boy Serge Gainsbourg as well. Some of his songs were redone by contemporary artists on the album ‘Gains nord’ that came out recently. His classic 'Je t'aime... moi non plus' is one of them. Westhell 5 turned it into a magnificent funky gem. Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra may sound familiar. Their 'Strange games & things' has been used for Destiny's Child breakthrough hit 'No, no, no'.

Cotton Comes To Harlem One of the tracks that I selected for this cloudcast is 'Band of gold' by Freda Payne. The song. written by Holland-Dozier-Holland after their split from Motown Records, went to number seven in the Netherlands and number three on Billboard in 1970, notching Payne her only Top Ten hit. It went all the way to number one in the UK. The lyrics are about a woman who has been let down by her guy on their wedding night... Speaking of Motown, according to Jason Ankeny (Allmusic.com), R. Unsplash The West Coast sound was not very popular in the Netherlands at the time, but it certainly has influenced some Dutch artists, most recently Martin & Garp. As Martijn Soetens wrote on his blog some time ago: “In the Netherlands an umbrella and a sweater are necessary almost any time of year. So it's quite natural that we need sunny music to get our vitamin D.” The most successful Dutch song that adapted the Californian sound is Sausalito Summernight by Diesel. It reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981 and it even became a #1 hit in Canada. In other countries, the track is known as " Sausolito Summernight ", as a result of a misspelling on the Dutch releases of the single and the album. This was corrected on the 1981 U.S. and Canadian releases. For some reason, the song charted only modestly in the Netherlands. Eventually the single sold 600,000 units worldwide.
