Soulful Takes And Breaks

Image
This mix is more or less inspired by the very nice Adidas commercial, sung by Dee Edwards, of course. One of my favorite tracks in this mix is ‘ Collage ’ by the Three Degrees. It’s some kind of ‘psychedelic soul’, done in their pre-Philly days. It sounds very cool, fresh and original. And I love the forgotten Marvin Gaye track when he shouts out his pain of a broken heart. If 'Schooboy crush' by the Average White Band sounds familiar: TLC used it in their breakthrough hit 'Ain't 2 proud 2 beg'. Enjoy! Tracklist: Syl Johnson – Ms. Fine Brown Frame (1982) Hi Gloss – All Day, All Night (1981) The Fatback Band – Feed Me With Your Love (1975) Doris – You Never Come Closer (1970) Ryan Shaw – Morning Noon And Night (2010) Holly St. James – That’s Not Love (1978) Dee Edwards – Why Can’t There Be Love (1972) Patti Drew – Hard To Handle (1969) Lee McDonald – We've Only Just Begun [TM Juke Mix] (2006) Solomon Burke & Gene Page – The Bus (1972) T

Gotta Be Funky Blue Note 2

Image
Again a collection of songs from the Blue Note and Capitol archives for the aficionado. My attempt to fill the gap of DJ Maestro's excellent 'Blue Note trip' series. One of the tracks, Herbie Hancock’s ‘Bring down the birds’, has been sampled by Deee-lite in their masterpiece ‘Groove is in the heart’ (featuring Q-Tip and P-funk bassist Bootsy Collins). Super DJ Dmitri, Lady Miss Kier and Towa Tei also used Vernon Burch’s 'Get up' for their classic. Both songs can be heard in Professor Eddy Breaks Down . Enjoy 'Gotta Be Funky Blue Note 2'! Part 1 came online the 4th of May. Picture by Bertie Hipkin . Tracklist: Rene & Angela – Rise (1981) Maze – Before I Let Go (1981) T-Connection – Party Night (1982) Bobbi Humphrey – Uno Esta (1975) Chico Hamilton – V-O (1975) Eddie Henderson – The Kumquat Kids (1975) Al Green – Everything’s OK (2005) Trijntje Oosterhuis & Leonardo Amuedo – I Just Can’t Stop Loving You (2009) Saint Germain – Lat

Double Disco Fantasy

It’s time for some good old-fashioned disco! The percussion driven D-R-U-M track was (surpringly enough!) produced by Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange. He later on produced albums for artists such as AC/DC, Nickelback, Def Leppard, Outlaws, Foreigner, The Cars, Bryan Adams, Billy Ocean and The Corrs. When he produced (and later married) countrypop singer Shania Twain he became a big name in the record (and gossip…) industry. The couple divorced two years ago. More about Kool & the Gang’s joyful ‘Let’s go dancing’ on Sound Insights . And you can find the outstanding 'Surat surfin' by Duliatten Disco Dancer on Todd Terje’s excellent new album ‘ Remaster of the universe ’. Please don't tell Dimitri From Paris , but I reworked his brand new edit of the Jacksons just a tiny little bit... Next up the final episode of the Blue Note series. Tracklist: Stephanie Mills – What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin' (1979) Love Unlimited – High Steppin' Hip Dressin' Fella (1979)

Breaking down!

Image
Breaks and samples unmasked: a collection of originals covers and (much) sampled tracks, the whole she-bang in one mix. And be warned: there’s a little bit of humour in it too. Music is not always a serious matter (well, at least not in my point of view). The song from the beautifully singing Jones Girls can be found on great new compilation, called Gimme A Break , which inspired me in a way to make this mix. Another source of inspiration was Mayer Hawthorne's Soul With A Hole Vol. 1 . I have a signed copy of it, which I'm very proud of! The track by the Odells is on this excellent mix-album as well. The picture is from Xenon Pulse . Tracklist: Scritti Politti – Die Alone (1999) Gene Harris & The 3 Sounds – The Look Of Slim [Madlib remix] (2003) De La Soul – Me Myself And I (1989) Daryl Hall & John Oates – I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) (1981) The Bird And The Bee – I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) (2010) Diana Ross – Love Hangover (1976) Monica – My

Funky Summer Chill

Image
This is a soulful chillout mix for warm and sweaty days! Some people describe my style as ‘funky chill’. Well, that’s exactly what this is: some funky shit to chill on! ;-) Special attention to 'Bouzouki' by Everything Serves The Moment, the closing track. Don’t rush to your local store to buy it, because it’s not out yet. Hopefully it will be released officially one day! Tracklist: Mystic Moods – Rollin’ In Love (1976) Soul Quality Quartet – Pressure (2004) Goldfrapp – Voicething [Eddy’s Edit] (2010) Saint Germain – Montego Bay Spleen (2000) Mongo Santamaria – Watermelon Man (1965) Som Très – Homenagem A Mongo (1969) Chris Clark – From Head To Toe (1967) Ronnie Foster – Backstabbers (1973) MFSB – We Got The Time (1976) Liquid Spirits – Music (2008) Azymuth – Last Summer In Rio (1982) Maureen McGovern – The Morning After (1972) McCrarys – Love On A Summer Night (1982) Kinobe – Slip Into Something Comfortable (2001) Art Webb – Free (1977) Leon W

Gotta Be Funky Blue Note

Image
More funky Blue Note for the aficionado. Funky chill from the jazz label that was founded by German immigrants Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff. Some time ago I did a Blue Note mix for Subnav.com . I tried to do something similar with this collection of songs from the Blue Note and Capitol archives. Blue Mitchell’s ‘Good Humour Man’ has been sampled many, many times. Most notably by UMC’s (‘One to grow on’). Tracklist: Trijntje Oosterhuis & Leonardo Amuedo – I Want You Back (2009) Al Green – Play To Win (2003) Meli'sa Morgan – Fool's Paradise (1986) René & Angela – Secret Rendez Vous (1985) Natalie Cole – Anna Mae (1977) Madlib – Please, Set Me At Ease (2003) Donald Byrd – Lansanna's Priestess [DJ Spinna Remix] (2004) Eddie Henderson – Say You Will (1977) Grant Green – Sookie Sookie (1970) Billy Larkin & the Delegates – Ain’t That A Groove (1966) Foxy – Mademoiselle (1978) Blue Mitchell – Good Humour Man (1968) Jimmy McGriff – Fat Cakes
