Smooth Sailing: Silky Soul & Groovy Disco

It's hard to describe my dj-style, but I often call it 'funky chill'. I play relaxed dance music with its foundation in the 1970s and early 1980s. It's a combination of soul, disco, funk, jazz, folk, soft rock, AOR and all the genres in between. It's music I'd like to hear when I'd drive along the Dutch coast on a sunny day. But I don't have a car, I live far away from the sea and it's raining most of the time in Holland, so I don't think that is a very good description... Perhaps I should say: this is the music that makes me happy, a collection of chilled out tunes for fellows over 40. These are songs for girls and guys who like to nod their heads to the beat in stead of nervously moving their legs...

On Wax Poetics singer Ed Motta has this to say about 'Let's be friends' by Marilyn Scott:

"Yellow Jacket’s Russell Ferrante wrote and arranged this classy AOR soul in a Norman Connors vein for the great singer Marilyn Scott’s debut album. I love everything on this track—what a composition, so well constructed. Composition is kinda lost nowadays. There’s still good young musicians and arrangers, but composition…dunno why I don’t see it anymore."

Minnie Ripterton's classic 'Lovin' you' is about her daughter, actress Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids). At the end of the song she repeatedly sings 'Maya, Maya, Maya'. Enjoy this new part of Smooth Sailing!

Apart from the picture of Sharron Davies, there are two songs that inspired me to make this mix. One of them is a recent track from Duck Sauce. The repetition of the female vocals reminded me of Stars On 45 (I believe they both sampled 'Gotta Go Home' by Boney M). The other one is from Dutch singer Dee Dee. I heard ‘I put a spell on you’ on a recent episode of Tim Sweeney’s ‘Beats in space’. In the accompanying video she looks a little bit like a sex doll, but I love the song! I like the closing track from soul veterans the Drifters, but isn’t it strange to hear guys who were in their thirties at the time sing about schoolgirls? We present some real yacht rock classics and yacht rock songs that we think should have been classics. Harden My Heart by American pop/rock group Quarterflash was written by guitarist Marv Ross and included on the band's debut album, Quarterflash (1981). Unsplash Enjoy the soundtrack to a West Coast sundown! 😊 The closing track by Matt Duncan is brand new, by the way. It sounds like a lost recording from The Nightfly sessions by Donald Fagen. At the time critics sometimes called David Cassidy’s music bubblegum pop. That was simply defined  music manufactured to sell as much records as possible and it was mostly aimed at a very young audience. Bubblegum's classic period ran from the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies. At that point disco music took over the single market. However, David Cassidy certainly made some very good records, although in later years he found it difficult to shake off his teen idol image. “His wispiest, breathiest hit was called ‘I Am A Clown’.
