Popular Jazz & Easy Listening From The Capitol Vaults

Kandace Springs by Mathieu Bitton I went down to the vaults of Capitol and affiliated labels, like Blue Note, EMI, Stateside, Liberty and United Artists again to dig up some hidden treasures! Next month singer, songwriter and pianist Kandace Springs will release her debut album ‘Soul eyes’ on Blue Note. Produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Klein (Lizz Wright, Melody Gardot, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock), the album touches upon soul and pop while channeling her jazz influences as well as her Nashville upbringing. Kandace's heroes are Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones, so it's no wonder that you can hear a little bit of 'The first time I ever saw your face' and 'Lady sings the blues' in her new single, the title-track of 'Soul eyes'. Gene Pitney's dramatic version of 'Twenty-four hours from Tulsa (written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David) reached the US top 20 in autumn 1963. The lyrics are abo

Joan Smalls Instagram Wow! One of my heroes of the 1980s, Martin Fry, has returned with a new ABC single, which will be followed by ‘Lexicon of Love part 2’ next week. The new edition, 34 years after part 1, is done without producer Trevor Horn and will feature only new songs. Living In A Box member Marcus Vere wrote four tracks on 'The Lexicon of Love II', including the first single 'Viva love'. The accompanying video is directed by eighties video icon Julien Temple. Stephen Shore Beautiful swimming pool picture is from Stephen Shore (1947). At seventeen, Shore met Andy Warhol and began to frequent Warhol's studio, the Factory, photographing Warhol and the creative people that surrounded him. In 1971, at the age of 24, Shore became the second living photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Shore then embarked on a series of cross-country trips, making "on the road" photographs of American and Canadian landscapes. I

Funky Chill Out

This time my cloudcast is a litle experimental, because I added some chill out elements. I was inspired by the ‘Contact high’ mixtape from Poolside and wanted to do something similar: funky grooves with a very relaxed beat. Poolside calls it ‘daytime disco’ and I name it ‘funky chill' or 'funky chll out'. Percussionist Hamilton Bohannon was born in Newnan, Georgia, in 1942. He learned the drums at school and began playing in local bands, one of which featured guitarist Jimi Hendrix. He then graduated from Clark College, Atlanta with a degree in music and secondary education. After a brief period as a schoolteacher, he was recruited in 1964 as drummer in 13-year-old Stevie Wonder's touring band. Three years later Bohannon moved to Detroit, where he was employed by Motown as the leader and arranger of Bohannon & The Motown Sound, who provided backing for many of the label's top acts on tour, including Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations,

The Smooth Operators present 'More Mellow Morning Moods'

Faye Dunaway Enjoy this new tribute to the 1970s FM radio sound by The Smooth Operators ! The track by Greg Yoder is from ‘AOR Global Sounds Vol.2’. That’s a new compilation by Charles Maurice and consists of 8 forgotten and rare tracks recorded between 1975 and 1983 in all parts of the globe. At the end of the 1970s, many artists over the world were deeply influenced by AOR’s famous stars such as Steely Dan and their classic album ‘Aja’. They tried to reach the same attention to sound production and details, and this specific West Coast style, mixing together pop-rock standards, with soul (sometimes disco) and jazz influences. It’s the sound that can be heard on this follow-up to Mellow Morning Moods . By the way, two tracks (Valerie Carter and Renee Geyer) are from ‘The Ladies Of Too Slow To Disco’, the new album compiled by DJ Supermarkt that came out last week. The liner notes are interesting as well. For instance, did you know that Amy Holland is actually Dutch and that her
