Singer/songwriter Jimmie Spheeris was the son of a traveling carnival family who settled in Venice, California. After the death of his father, Spheeris moved to New York City to develop a songwriting career. He befriended Richie Havens, who introduced him to Columbia Records. The company subsequently signed him for a four-album deal. After the fourth LP Ports of The Heart, released in 1976, Spheeris could not get another contract. Only a 1980 single came out the following years. In the early morning of Independence Day 1984, just after finishing a new album, Spheeris died in a motorcycle accident.
