Sunshine Trippin’ On A Lazy Afternoon by The Smooth Operators

Image
Pexels The Smooth Operators (Martijn Soetens and I) are taking it slow on a lazy afternoon😊 Enjoy!  First formed as a backing band, Con Funk Shun became one of the premiere party-funk groups of the 1970s before turning to a more slick R&B sound the next decade. Aside from being the primary musicians on all their albums, the band also contributed to each of their albums as writers, arrangers, and producers. Signed to Mercury in 1976, Con Funk Shun hit the top of the R&B charts one year later with Ffun , written as a tribute to funk band Brick. Over a ten-year span, they released one hit after another (including Shake And Dance With Me , Chase Me and Got To Be Enough ) and were a popular concert attraction as well. California 1 is from their 1981 album Con Funk Shun 7 . Tracklist: Antena – Seaside Week End (1985) Jessie Ware – Hello Love (2023) The DMX Affair ‎– One Time To Make It Right (1985) Wham! – Blue (Armed With Love) (1983) Rhye – Hunger (2013) Michael Franks – L

Reeling In The Years: Yacht Rock History Pt.1 1972/1973

Image
Unsplash The founding fathers of yacht rock were without any doubt Steely Dan. They created a smooth pop/rock sound that would later become the start of a genre. Although not yet strictly yacht rock, Loggins and Messina were the first ones who used the image of a sailboat on the cover of their 1973 album Full Sail . On the other hand, one could argue that the Beach Boys used similar imagery years before, but they referred to surfing more particular. The Beach Boys were definitely an influence on the genre, but in the mid-seventies, when yacht rock came together on the West Coast, the popularity of this Californian band was already fading. Enjoy this start of the new series Reeling In The Years ! Next week The Smooth Operators will return 😊 Tracklist: Bread – Sweet Surrender Carpenters – Yesterday Once More Maureen McGovern – The Morning After John Edwards – Tin Man Puzzle – Mary Mary Charles Mann – Do It Again Steely Dan – Reelin’ In The Years Batteaux – Tell Her She’s Lovely

Sunshine Radio: Seventies Summer Sounds

Image
Pexels Enjoy the seventies summer sounds on Sunshine Radio ! Spring has already arrived, so it won’t take long before summer is finally here! 😊 Two of the songs are from the excellent new compilation album Once Again We Are The Children Of The Sun , released by BBE Records. When rock ‘n’ roll became history in the early sixties, new exciting music was breaking through on AM radio, fore fronted by The Beatles and the sound of Motown. Adventurous dj’s on offshore radio stations knew what was going on musically and so-called "pirate radio" was immensely popular. In the 1970s the musical landscape changed in many ways. Disco music that could be heard in clubs became leading, and for the first time radio was no longer dominant in discovering fresh sounds. The powerful “big bang” AM radio pop sound had died out by then and more sophisticated songs in better sound quality on the FM radio dial became the new standard. Glam rock and early disco ruled the airwaves in 1974, but harmony

Smooth Sailing: AOR, Yacht Rock & Late Night Pop

Pexels The opening track of this new Smooth Sailing episode is the new single by S-Tone Inc. and Toco, titled Vento Doce (Sweet Wind). It is the first release from the upcoming S-Tone Inc. album. The song is a midtempo groove with a Balearic vibe, led by an almost reggae style guitar and a pumping bassline: “The refrain brings you to the warmth of a sunset by the Mediterranean Sea, creating a bridge between the Brazilian saudade and the Neapolitan melodic heritage.” (Bandcamp) American Gypsy did not have an American breakthrough, so they went to Europe and decided to stay in the Netherlands, because it was easy to talk English here. Unfortunately, this funk-rock band never had any worldwide hits. Angel Eyes was their only top ten hit in the Netherlands. The track was written by Piet Souer, who played guitar on The Troubadour , the Eurovision Song Contest winner of 1969. This Saturday the winner of the 2023 contest will be voted. It will it not be the Netherlands again, because the D

Cashbox Disco Top 20 – April 28, 1979 (Everybody Get Dancin’)

Jana Bemol Around this time in 1979, you could not only dance to the biggest disco hits, most of the lyrics were about dancing too! In The Navy by The Village People and Hot Stuff by Donna Summer just missed the top 20. Like Cher's Take Me Home and Liquid Gold’s My Baby’s Baby , those songs were released by Casablanca Records. Spinning Gold , a movie about the founder of the company, Neil Bogart, is shown in theatres right now. Enjoy! Amii Stewart began attending Howard University in Washington but soon left to work with the D.C. Repertory Dance Company, studying ballet and modern dance. Before becoming a recording artist, Stewart was in the touring company of the stage production Bubbling Brown Sugar . When she was in London, she met record producer Barry Leng. Her debut single and biggest hit, a disco cover version of the 1966 Eddie Floyd hit Knock On Wood , reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1979, and earned her a platinum record and a Grammy Award nomination.
