Reeling In The Years: Yacht Rock History Pt.1 1972/1973

The founding fathers of yacht rock were without any doubt Steely Dan. They created a smooth pop/rock sound that would later become the start of a genre. Although not yet strictly yacht rock, Loggins and Messina were the first ones who used the image of a sailboat on the cover of their 1973 album Full Sail. On the other hand, one could argue that the Beach Boys used similar imagery years before, but they referred to surfing more particular. The Beach Boys were definitely an influence on the genre, but in the mid-seventies, when yacht rock came together on the West Coast, the popularity of this Californian band was already fading.
