Enjoy this Sunshine Radio chart rundown from 20 to 1! Disco came knocking on the door of the Billboard Hot Soul Singles Chart of July 12th 1975 with Van McCoy’s The Hustle at number one. However, most of the songs were from veteran soul and funk acts, like Gladys Knight & The Pips, the Four Tops, Ben E. King and the Isley Brothers.

The story of the Isley Brothers is quite remarkable. In 1959, when they first charted with Shout, they were contemporaries of rock ‘n’ roll legends like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. In the 1960s, the group recorded songs for a variety of labels, including Twist And Shout (later covered by The Beatles) and the Motown single This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You), but they could not find a real style of their own yet. In 1969 they released the Grammy Award-winning hit It's Your Thing on their own label, T-Neck Records. The next decade the brothers were at the peak of their career, when they reinvented themselves as a funk-rock band and recorded hits like That Lady and Summer Breeze with wonderful guitar solos, played by younger brother Ernie. During the 1980s the Isley Brothers went on with a more sophisticated R&B sound, especially on their 1987 Smooth Sailin' album. Ernie Isley joined Isley-Jasper-Isley briefly, but returned in the 1990s. He and singer Ron are the remaining members at present and they occasionally successfully perform and record.

Apart from the picture of Sharron Davies, there are two songs that inspired me to make this mix. One of them is a recent track from Duck Sauce. The repetition of the female vocals reminded me of Stars On 45 (I believe they both sampled 'Gotta Go Home' by Boney M). The other one is from Dutch singer Dee Dee. I heard ‘I put a spell on you’ on a recent episode of Tim Sweeney’s ‘Beats in space’. In the accompanying video she looks a little bit like a sex doll, but I love the song! I like the closing track from soul veterans the Drifters, but isn’t it strange to hear guys who were in their thirties at the time sing about schoolgirls? Unsplash Enjoy the soundtrack to a West Coast sundown! 😊 The closing track by Matt Duncan is brand new, by the way. It sounds like a lost recording from The Nightfly sessions by Donald Fagen. At the time critics sometimes called David Cassidy’s music bubblegum pop. That was simply defined  music manufactured to sell as much records as possible and it was mostly aimed at a very young audience. Bubblegum's classic period ran from the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies. At that point disco music took over the single market. However, David Cassidy certainly made some very good records, although in later years he found it difficult to shake off his teen idol image. “His wispiest, breathiest hit was called ‘I Am A Clown’.
