While imported disco records dominated playlists during the 1980s in Indonesia, a local music scene had developed in parallel, with popular artists like Grace Simon, Chaseiro and Andi Meriem Matalatta. They embraced the use of synthesizers and drum machines, modern studio production and influences from western pop, rock, funk, boogie, disco, jazz, yacht rock as well as Japanese city pop. Songs from this very interesting Indonesian pop scene (1979-1991) will be available on Tanamur City, out on Cultures Of Soul next month.
The track by The Brothers Johnson is originally from their 1981 Winners album (the first one without Quincy Jones). In The Way was written by three of the Toto guys and that’s why it’s on the new Too Slow To Disco compilation as well:
“It combines the patented BrosJo Funk with the kind of breezy LA Yacht-Rock sound that all of the record’s participants were right at the heart of creating.”
Next up is part 40 of Eddy's Eighties Grooves!
