Mellow Mellow FM Presents Lazy Days Of Summer

Enjoy this new episode of Mellow Mellow FM! Some of the songs on this cloudcast can be referred to as “quiet storm”. The genre (named after a Smokey Robinson song) is a smooth R&B radio format that was pioneered in the mid-1970s by Melvin Lindsey, while he was an intern at the Washington, D.C. radio station WHUR-FM. It was popular as a programming niche, mostly among Afro-Americans in the suburbs. The popularity of quiet storm started to fade around the early 1990s. Ben Fong-Torres of Rolling Stone defined quiet storm as:
"a blend of pop, jazz fusion, and R&B ballads—all elegant and easy-flowing, like a flute of Veuve Clicquot champagne.”
Last week Don Everly, one half of the Everly Brothers passed away. After their successes in the 1950s and 1960s, they went their separate ways in the 1970s. When brother Phil had finished his Star Spangled Springer album in 1973, he sent a copy of it to the Hollies. He thought it would be fun if the British band did a cover of one his songs, because they always had expressed their admiration for the Everly Brothers. They actually did cover one of the tracks from the LP, but it was the one song that Phil Everly did not write. The Hollies recorded a version of The Air That I Breathe, a composition by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood. They copied Phil Everly’s arrangement in its entirety and later acknowledged the producer, Duane Eddy. Their cover reached number two on the Dutch and UK Singles Chart and number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1974. The audio engineering for The Air That I Breathe was done by Alan Parsons, who would later become famous as producer and for his Alan Parsons Project. In an interview, Parsons mentioned that Eric Clapton said the first note of The Air That I Breathe had more soul than anything he had ever heard.
