Cool Out: A Funky Chillout Summer Session

Image
Unsplash It’s still April, but the last couple of days it feels like summertime in the Netherlands already 😊 Enjoy this funky chillout summer session ! I told it before, Groovejet by Spiller was co-composed by Rob Davis, guitarist of successful seventies glam rock band Mud. He was the one who wrote the melody. A new slowed down, chillout mix of Groovejet by Breakbot & Irfane came out recently. The song was an instrumental track in the very beginning, then Sophie Ellis-Baxtor was asked to do vocals on it: “I agreed to sing on the track and went into the studio with my own ideas and wrote the verses quickly. Eventually, they spliced my verses with a brilliant chorus by Rob Davis. Mine was rubbish in comparison! The track’s magic is in his chorus and Spiller’s instrumental. I was so happy to be the voice on it.” ( The Guardian ) Next up is a new part of Best Of 70s Soul ! Tracklist: Spiller (Feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor) ‎– Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) [Breakbot & Irfane Re

Mellow Mellow FM Retro: Springtime In Venice Beach

Image
Tyler Nix Think of L.A.’s Venice Beach about 40 years ago, when boys and girls in shorts were roller-skating with the latest hits on their Sony headphones. If you search for the YouTube video of Tarney Spencer’s No Time To Lose or watch the movie Roller Dreams , then you’ll know exactly what I mean. Venice Beach back in the day became the inspiration for this new episode of Mellow Mellow FM . Enjoy the late seventies, early eighties sound of West Coast radio! “Unflinchingly, one can compare Cado Belle to the best of Rose Royce.” (Allmusic about Cado Belle’s only album with lead vocals from Maggie Reilly, known for her later work with Mike Oldfield) Tracklist: Dent May – Why I Came To California (2019) Lovelock – Someone (2022) Men At Work – It's A Mistake (1983) The Band Camino – I Think I Like You (2021) Brian Protheroe – Enjoy It [Remix] (1975) Pages – Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong (1979) Kelly Willard – Blame It On The One I Love (1978) Nielsen/Pearson – If You Should Sail (1

Eddy’s 80s Grooves Part 43 Let’s Mix It Up

Image
Unsplash Let’s go back again to the decade of leg warmers and ghetto blasters! 😊 Between the tracks by Michael Jackson and Eddy Grant, I used  a snippet from a 1982 mix by legendary house-dj Mickey Oliver on 102.7 WBMX. He predated the house sound of Chicago by mixing electro pop (Human League, Yazoo) and italo disco together with R&B. At WBMX he frequently worked with Farley Jackmaster Funk, Kenny Jammin' Jason, Ralphi Rockin' Rosario, and Scott Smokin' Silz. They named themselves The Hot Mix 5 and set the standard for all others to follow. Their turntablism tactics have influenced the best DJ's even to this day. Mickey Oliver has been named by the London Observer as one of the 10 most influential DJs of all time. The City of Chicago has recently recognized Mickey for his contributions to dance music and has named a street after him called Mickey Mixin’ Oliver Blvd. In the mid-sixties, at the peak of her career, Mary Wells, then called “the Queen of Motown”, left

Smooth Sailing On A Dead Calm Sea

Image
Max Libertine Just feel the vibe on this dead calm episode of Smooth Sailing ! 😊 In 1977 Dean Friedman's first single Ariel was a hit in the US, but it did not reach the charts on the other side of the ocean. A year later, Lydia , from his second album, Well Well Said The Rocking Chair , reached #31 in the UK and #29 in the Netherlands, but for some reason it did not chart overseas. Dean Friedman said about this epic love song: "I wrote it about a lovely young lady I dated when I was just starting out in the music business, but I used her roommate's name to protect the not-so-innocent." Tracklist: Narada Michael Walden – Crazy For Ya [1969å¹´ Edit] (1979) Loose Ends – Feel The Vibe (1990) Magic Source – Genius Of Love (2022) Prince ‎– I Wanna Be Your Lover (1979) Lobo ‎– There Ain't No Way (1973) Todd Rundgren ‎– A Dream Goes On Forever (1974) Dean Friedman – Lydia (1978) Prefab Sprout – When Love Breaks Down (1985) Peter McCann ‎– Do You Wanna Make Love

1974 The Year When Disco Became Popular

Image
In 1974 Rock The Boat by The Hues Corporation and Rock Your Baby by George McCrae were the first disco hits that reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Club music started to dominate the charts for the first time in music history. It was 'the year of decision", to quote The Three Degrees. In the Guardian his co-writer Paul Politi told about disco pioneer Barry White and his wife Glodean (of Love Unlimited): “Glodean and Barry had a wonderful relationship. But when we went on the road together, all of a sudden she wasn’t Glodean, Barry’s wife, she was part of the Love Unlimited trio. It became about business, and she would call him Mr White.” Enjoy this Mixcloud Exclusive ! Tracklist:  The Three Degrees – Year Of Decision [A Tom Moulton Mix] (1974) Labelle – Voulez-vous Coucher Avec Moi, Ce Soir?
