Smooth Sailing: Nice & Easy

Image
Pexels We’re doing it nice and easy on this new Smooth Sailing trip, enjoy! The tracks by Tonique & Man, State Cows and Super DB are brand new. The funny thing about yacht rock artists, like Christopher Cross, Rupert Holmes and Bread singer David Gates, is that they do not have the image of rock stars at all. They look more like nerdy computer programmers on their way to the office. In his book Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story Of Modern Pop author Bob Stanley even compares David Gates to “the uncoolest kid at school”. Who, What, When, Where, Why by Rupert Holmes is from his 1976 album Singles : “Holmes' song writing was as intelligent and sophisticated as ever. His trenchant lyrics virtuously described the romantic struggles and complicated relationships of the middle class in the 70s.” (Thomas Splett) Tracklist: Tonique & Man – You Make Me Feel So Good (2023) Pablo Cruise – I Go To Rio (1978) Jerry Corbetta – Between A Rock And A Hard Place (1978) Christopher Cross – Ride

1973 The Year When Disco Started To Blossom

Image
Martijn Soetens Enjoy the spring time of disco in this new part of the disco years ! Rolling Stone journalist Vince Aletti first spoke of ‘disco’ in 1973, so we are celebrating 50 years of disco this year  😊. The tracks I chose made the (disco) ball rolling. For instance, Girl, You Need A Change Of Mind by Eddie Kendricks was one of the first songs with a (disco) break and The Love I Lost by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes was the first track that had an uptempo - 4 to the floor - disco beat. It was invented by session drummer Earl Young of Philadelphia International, the record company that was at the forefront of disco. Some of the tracks, like the one by The Temptations, were favorites of Nicky Siano, the owner of nightclub The Gallery in New York City. He helped shaping disco in the beginning of the 1970s, years before clubs like Studio 54, The Loft and the Paradise Garage became synonyms of disco. Next up is another Mixcloud Exclusive ! Tracklist: The Three Degree s ‎– Dirty

Eddy’s 80s Grooves Part 47

Image
Pexels After Mary Wells had left Motown in 1965, her career went downhill, but in 1981 she unexpectedly returned to the charts with a little help from famous producers the Mizell Brothers. The funky disco sound of Gigolo  (with a rap from Mary!) appealed to a club audience and put her back on the map for a short while. The single reached #2 on the Billboard Disco chart, #13 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart and #69 on the R&B singles chart. Unfortunately, the In And Out Of Love album was not as successful as its only hit single and Mary Wells disappeared from view again. Enjoy part 47 of  Eddy's Eighties Grooves ! Tracklist: Eramus Hall – Keep Me Burnin’ (1984) Evelyn "Champagne" King – Shake Down (1983) Mary Wells – Gigolo (1981) Dayton – Conversation (1982) Kerr – Back At Ya (1984) Valerie Dore – The Night (1984) Randy Hall – All Night (1988) Change – Change Of Heart (1984) Pauli Carman – Dial My Number (1986) Time Bandits – Live It Up (1981) Michael Jonzun –

Sunny Breeze From The West Coast

Unsplash Enjoy this sunny breeze from the West Coast: mostly light-hearted pop music influenced by the Californian vibe of the late seventies! The tracks by Jann Klose, Kaiser Snap and Laure Briard are brand new. The relatively unknown song So Hard To Be Away by Margaret Wakeley is taken from her 1976 album Better Days . Star Studded Sham by Hello is one of the tracks on the new compilation album Teenage Glampage – Can The Glam 2 , released on Cherry Red Records: “A cool little package that goes way beyond the obvious glam rock numbers you might know from the 70s” (Dusty Groove) Tracklist: Whitney Houston – You Give Good Love (1985) Starpoint – I Got The Love (1983) Pete Warner – I Just Want To Spend My Life With You (1975) Robert Byrne – I Did It All For Love (1979) Paul Davis – Do Right (1980) Valentine Brothers – The Sound Of Music (1979) Johnny Mathis & Angela Bofill – You’re A Special Part Of Me (1984) Margaret Wakeley – So Hard To Be Away (1976) Dan Fogelberg – Lon
