1973 The Year When Disco Started To Blossom

Martijn Soetens
Enjoy the spring time of disco in this new part of the disco years! Rolling Stone journalist Vince Aletti first spoke of ‘disco’ in 1973, so we are celebrating 50 years of disco this year ðŸ˜Š.

The tracks I chose made the (disco) ball rolling. For instance, Girl, You Need A Change Of Mind by Eddie Kendricks was one of the first songs with a (disco) break and The Love I Lost by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes was the first track that had an uptempo - 4 to the floor - disco beat. It was invented by session drummer Earl Young of Philadelphia International, the record company that was at the forefront of disco.

Some of the tracks, like the one by The Temptations, were favorites of Nicky Siano, the owner of nightclub The Gallery in New York City. He helped shaping disco in the beginning of the 1970s, years before clubs like Studio 54, The Loft and the Paradise Garage became synonyms of disco.

Next up is another Mixcloud Exclusive!
