Funkytown: Tribute To Casablanca Records

Image
My alternative soundtrack to the brand new movie Spinning Gold about the founder of record company Casablanca, Neil Bogart. I saw the film in a special preview today. Enjoy this month's Mixcloud Exclusive ! In his book And Party Every Day: The Inside Story of Casablanca Record s, co-founder Larry Harris writes: “Casablanca was not a product of the 1970s, it was the 1970s. And no person or company in that era of narcissism and druggy gluttony was more emblematic of the times than Casablanca Records and its magnetic founder, Neil Bogart.” Spinning Gold gives a beautiful, but not always truthful image of the time. Neil Bogart who named himself after actor Humphrey Bogart, is portrayed as a disco pioneer, but in fact he only knew how to sell artists and just jumped on the bandwagon. By signing Donna Summer to the label he found a golden trump card and the lifebuoy he needed for his company. The film suggests that Bogart changed her name into Summer, but she was already a big star i

Sunny Breeze From The West Coast Part 2

Image
Unsplash Summer is coming…. I can feel it! So enjoy another sunny breeze from the West Coast😊 All songs are from the heyday of yacht rock (1975-1983). Jaye P. Morgan made one of the best yacht rock albums ever in 1976. The self-titled LP featured an extraordinary line up of the best LA musicians around at the time, including David Foster, Harvey Mason, Ed Greene, Jay Graydon, Ray Parker Jr., Tower of Power, Ernie Watts and Jeff Porcaro. Two decades earlier Jaye P. Morgan was already established as a singer. For instance, The Longest Walk and That's All I Want From You were both very successful on the American charts. During the 1960s she led a rather obscure and private life, performing infrequently in nightclubs. She resurfaced in the 1970s when she gained popularity through her TV appearances. She was a guest on the Muppet Show in 1978 and for two years she was a regular panelist on The Gong Show, on which she achieved notoriety for exposing her breasts on live daytime televis

Smooth Sailing: Eighties Summer Vibes

Image
Rodnae Productions The track by Squeeze is from the soundtrack to the movie Air that I saw last week. The songs by Bengt Liedman and Huntington & Baumann are from the brilliant new compilation album Once Again We Are The Children Of The Su n. I will definitely play more from it soon! Eighties inspired band Waterleaf are from my home town Groningen. Their new single A Man Is A Man is about inappropriate behavior of men: "The track aims to shed light on the problematic consequences statements such as ‘boys will be boys’ can have. How will things ever change if there is no one to take responsibility?" (Waterleaf) Enjoy this "eighties summer vibes" part of Smooth Sailing ! Tracklist: Pointer Sisters – I Need You (1983) Soulpersona & Princess Freesia ‎–  Where Do I Go From Here [Soulpersona Raregroove Remix] (2023) Cannons ‎– Loving You (2023) Waterleaf – A Man Is A Man (2023) Prizm – Everywhere (2023) Johnny Hates Jazz – Heart Of Gold (1988) Bengt Liedman

Capitol Grooves From The Crates

Image
Martijn Soetens I went down to the vaults of Capitol and affiliated labels, like Blue Note, EMI, Stateside, Liberty, Virgin and United Artists to compile another episode of Grooves From The Crates ! Evie Sands began recording as a teenager in the mid-1960s, but it took a few years before she had a hit record. Her first single was stolen and released earlier by someone else, her second single became a hit for the Hollies and her third release did not chart because her record company went bankrupt. In 1969 Sands finally scored with the A&M single Any Way That You Want Me, a Chip Taylor composition, previously recorded by both the American Breed and the Troggs 3 years earlier. The song reached #53 on the Billboard Hot 100. I Love Makin’ Love To You is from her 1975 LP Estate Of Mind , produced by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter and one of the highlights of her career. Tracklist: Jordan Rakei – Wind Parade (2020) William DeVaughn – Be Thankful For What You've Got [New Version]
