Mellow Mellow FM: Golden Days Of Soul, Disco & Radio Pop

Image
Let’s end this year with one more look at the golden days of radio pop and R&B! Apart from seventies and eighties songs, I selected three of the best tracks of 2021: While The Music’s On by Page 99 (yacht rock), Wounds Of Lov e by Nation Of Language (electro) and Only For Tonight by Pearl Charles (disco). Enjoy this exclusive episode of Mellow Mellow FM ! We all long for a bit of summer in the winter, that’s why I chose to play She Works Hard For The Money by Donna Summer!😊 During a meal at a luxurious Hollywood restaurant, her eyes fell upon an exhausted washroom attendant taking a nap on the job and she decided to write a song about her. It was accompanied by a video that got heavy rotation on MTV at a time when few black artists were being played by the channel. She Works Hard for Her Money topped the R&B charts for three weeks and hit number three pop in the summer of 1983. The same-titled LP went gold, peaking at number five R&B and number nine pop. "Given

Super Softness Of The Seventies

Image
C-Heads Magazine Music never sounded as soft as in the 1970s. This is the proof, enjoy! 😊 In the 1970s singer/songwriter Jimmie Spheeris found it hard to reach commercial success, although he released 4 beautiful albums. After Ports Of The Heart , which came out in 1976, Spheeris lost his recording contract: “Commercially, Spheeris wasn't where he deserved to be in 1976, but creatively, he was on a roll. The L.A. native incorporates a variety of influences on this album, including jazz, folk and country. In fact, jazzmen Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke are among the guests.” (Allmusic.com) Next up is a new part of Mellow Mellow FM ! Tracklist:  Rena Scott – Touch The Love In Your Heart (1979) Fonda Feingold – Fly (1978) Janis Ian – In The Winter (1975) Jimmie Spheeris – Child From Nowhere (1976) Graham Dee ‎– Make The Most Of Every Moment (1977) Maxine Weldon – Make It With You (1971) Dee Dee Bridgewater – He’s Gone (1976) Captain & Tenille – No Love In The Morning (197

Smooth Sailing: Wouldn’t You Rather Have A Yacht?

Image
Pixabay Wouldn’t you rather have a yacht? 😊 On this one I broadened the definition of yacht rock a tiny little bit with some wave and power pop tracks from the 1980s. Enjoy! The track by Mud was originally the flipside of L’L’ Lucy and is now on the brand new 4CD box set Mud: The Albums 1975-1979 , out on Cherry Red Records. Although written by guitarist Rob Davis and bassist Ray Stiles, My Love Is Your Love was not first recorded by Mud, but by sibling trio Ellie. They were formed by Ellie, Kathy and Christine Hope. The sisters provided background vocals on Mud records and released two singles themselves in the mid-seventies. Ellie Hope appeared on Top Of The Pops with Mud, when they performed their UK number one single Oh Boy . A couple of years later she would become famous as the lead singer of disco group Liquid Gold, mostly known for their smash Dance Yourself Dizzy. Mud guitarist Rob Davis married Christine Hope and made a big mark in pop history when he co-wrote Groovejet

Groovy, Sexy & Soulful Part 69 Here We Go Again

Image
Unsplash Just for once I rebooted my series Groovy, Sexy & Soulful . Enjoy! 😊 In an interview with C-Heads Magazine Dutch singer Rina tells that her new single Exhibition Closed is about not feeling the need to share her love and relationships on social media. It´s about keeping her own privateness. Besides that she wants to keep a realistic image of herself on socials: “I want to show the happy and beautiful moments, but also the sad and painful moments that everyone goes through.” Next up is a new part of Smooth Sailing . It will be a slightly heavier trip than the previous ones. Tracklist: Victoria Monét – Coastin’ (2021) Mary Jane Girls – All Night Long (1983) Soul II Soul – Back To Life (However Do You Want Me) (1989) Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On [Old School Remix] (1971) Aaliyah – Rock The Boat (2001) Full Flava Feat. Carleen Anderson – Was That All It Was  (2007) Filo Machado – Quero Pouco, Quero Muito (1983) Ray Barretto – Here We Go Again (1977) Johnny Hammond – Fa

Mellow Mellow FM: Rainy Days & Radio Waves

Image
Unsplash Enjoy this rainy Mixcloud Exclusive ! 😊 Next time I will reboot my series Groovy, Sexy & Soulful . The track by Ben Moore is a yacht soul cover of the Seals & Crofts original. In 1969, ten years before Get Closer , Ben Moore joined the duo James & Bobby Purify, after Bobby Purify (real name Robert Lee Dickey) retired for health reasons. In the 1970s Ben Moore recorded a couple of solo albums. One of them was Slow Dancin' , on which Get Closer appeared. In 1998, he became blind from severe glaucoma and left the music industry temporarily. In 2006 he joined the gospel band The Blind Boys Of Alabama. From the end of the 1960s, Delores Hall performed in several musical revues in Los Angeles and on Broadway. In 1973 her debut LP was released by RCA Records titled Hall-Mark , produced by Billy Jackson. Her first movie part was in Scrooged in the 1980s. She also played a security guard named Delores in Lethal Weapon 3 . On television she was a regular on the first

Mellow Mellow FM: The Power Of Late Sixties & Early Seventies Radio

Image
Pixabay In short, this was the kind of music that was mostly played on the radio in the late sixties and early seventies. In the mid-sxities rock ‘n’ roll was already history and new exciting music was breaking through on AM radio, catapulted by The Beatles. Adventurous dj’s on offshore radio stations knew what was going on musically and so-called "pirate radio" was immensely popular. Ten years later the musical landscape had changed in many ways. Disco music that could be heard in clubs became leading, and radio was no longer dominant in discovering fresh sounds. In the meantime FM radio had replaced AM radio as the most popular dial and offshore stations disappeared, but at the end of this era (1965-1974), pop music was shaped as we know it today. In Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story Of Modern Pop , Bob Stanley wrote about God Only Knows by the Beach Boys: “It’s impossible to exaggerate how beautiful this song is.” In the same book Stanley sums up the history of the Mamas & th

Smooth Sailing: Adult Rock & Autumn Gold

Image
C-Heads Magazine Enjoy the sundown during this smooth sailing trip on a beautiful autumn evening! Although a magnificent singer and nominated for a Tony award, the career of Phyllis Hyman never blossomed. She had a troubled relationship with her record company Arista, because of artistic differences and a controversial nude photoshoot for Oui Magazine in 1982. She also had to deal with some mental problems. She suffered from bipolar disorder and depression for years, having been diagnosed in the 1980s. She also struggled with an alcohol and drugs addiction. The singer died by suicide on June 30, 1995.  “While she never attained a pop hit or went gold, no list of the best soul ballads, quiet storm deep cuts, or disco singles is complete without Hyman's impeccably rich voice.” (Allmusic.com) Next up is a new part of Mellow Mellow FM , followed by a Mixcloud Exclusiv e . Tracklist: Ronney Abramson – Light Up Your Love (1978) Phyllis Hyman – Be Careful (1978) Jussi Halme – Autumn G

Eddy’s Eighties “Saturday Night” Grooves

Kenneth Hagemeyer An hour at a club in the 1980s must have sounded something like this: some underground dance tracks, a few hits of the moment and a couple of mixing tricks. Enjoy! The original version of Break Out by The Pointer Sisters was released in the U.S. on November 6, 1983, followed by a resequenced version soon after. I Need You was issued as the first single and was an adult contemporary hit, but it just barely cracked the U.S. top 40. When the follow up singles Automatic and Jump both hit the top five on all three of the U.S. pop, R&B and dance charts, the album shot into the top ten. The most common version of the album was the third release and appeared in stores when Jump (For Your Love) was at the peak of its success. The opening track by Jesse Johnson is from The Breakfast Club soundtrack and the closing track is from Pretty In Pink , two hugely successful eighties movies. Next up is a new Smooth Sailing part and there will be a Mixcloud Exclusive soon as

Chillin’ Out On Board Of The Floating Hotel

Image
Haim & Taylor Swift Welcome on board of the floating hotel! This mix is slightly different from the ones I usually make. My intention was to put together a chill wave mix, but I threw in some yacht rock and funk as well. In the end it has become quite eclectic. I hope you will enjoy! When Jeremy Spencer left Fleetwood Mac overnight to become a member of a Christian sect, guitarist Bob Welch replaced him and played on several albums during the first part of the 1970s. After Mick Fleetwood had asked the duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to join the band, Welch started a solo career. He made some well-received albums until 1983, but sales steadily declined and he eventually became a songwriter in Nashville. During the 1980s he had to cope with a serious drug addiction. In 1994, he filed a lawsuit against Fleetwood Mac, claiming he was underpaid royalties during his employment. The case was settled out of court, but Welch stated that Fleetwood Mac took revenge by having him exc

Mellow Mellow FM: Radio Pop, FM Rock & AM Soul

Unsplash Hop in your car, tune in to Mellow Mellow FM Radio and start driving! 😊  When Phil Everly had finished his Star Spangled Springer album in 1973, he sent a copy of it to the Hollies. He thought it would be fun if this British band did a cover of one his songs, because they always had expressed their admiration for the Everly Brothers. They actually did cover one of the tracks from the LP, but it was the one song that Phil Everly did not write. They recorded a version of The Air That I Breathe , a song that first appeared on Albert Hammond’s 1972 album It Never Rains In California . The Hollies made a worldwide success of the song, using the arrangement that Duane Eddy had written for Phil Everly.  Get Closer is the title track from Seals & Crofts eighth studio album, released when they were at the peak of their success. The duo wrote the song together. Guest star on backing vocals is Carolyn Willis. She was a part of the early seventies R&B vocal trio The Honey Cone,

1975 The Year When Disco Became Mainstream

Image
Unsplash By late 1974, Billboard and Record World had introduced charts focusing on popular club tracks. On October 26 1974, Billboard launched the Disco Action chart which featured top plays from club dj's, who had to meet certain criteria. The following year became crucial in the history of disco music. It was the moment when club music that had been bubbling under on the east coast in the early part of the decade, finally reached both the radio stations and the record stores in high quantities. Disco became mainstream, in other words. It was the start of something big, a game changer in popular music. If Everybody Hustle by Funky People sounds familiar in some way, then you are right, because it was composed by Randy Muller, an original member of Brass Construction, known for seventies classics such as Movin’ and Changin’ . He went on to write and arrange disco hits for B.T. Express (string arrangement Peace Pipe ) and Skyy ( Call Me ). Some of the tracks can also be found on

Fascination: Eighties Synth-Pop & Club Wave

Image
The other day I saw a documentary about Steve Strange, the frontman of eighties electro band Visage. He owned several extravagant clubs in London during the 1980s, most notably The Blitz. A night at one his clubs must have sounded something like this cloudcast. Enjoy eighties inspired synth-pop and club wave for subscribers only! 😊   I drew some inspiration from Musik Music Musique 2.0 (out now). This compilation album concentrates on 1981, the year synth pop broke into the mainstream: "From chart bothering, High Street nightclub anthems to self-pressed one-offs and cassette releases, this set provides an overview of the scene as it blossomed and an introduction to a wealth of fascinating, lesser known material." This Friday Metamatic Records will release two gatefold and limited edition versions of John Foxx’s classic 1981 album The Garden to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Europe After The Rain is one of the tracks. Last Friday electro pop duo Mothermary released thei

Let's Go To San Francisco: Sunshine Pop & Sixties Soul

Image
Pixabay This time I mainly tried to capture the “summer of love” and beyond feeling, roughly the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. One of the sounds that dominated the radio waves back then was the so-called psychedelic pop that had its origins in California. Because the lyrics were overall optimistic and to avoid confusion with psychedelic rock, the genre became later known as sunshine pop. Main influences were the rich harmony vocals of the Beach Boys and The Mamas & The Papas. They set a very high standard for vocal groups in the late 1960s. In the beginning of the next decade, people seemed to have heard enough of it and the genre faded out. The 5th Dimension are featured in the very cool Disney+ documentary Summer Of Soul about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival aka ‘Black Woodstock’. The brand new sunshine pop track by Swedish pop princess Robyn and Smile will appear on Smile’s upcoming album, Phantom Island , out on November 19th. Tracklist: Smile Feat. Robyn

Mellow Mellow FM Presents Easy Listening, Smooth Rock & Danceable Pop

Image
Unsplash I received many requests by e-mail and on my social media for another non-exclusive Mellow Mellow FM episode, so here it is! I’ve always liked the combination of smooth rock and danceable pop on the radio, so this episode is some kind of blueprint of what could have been my most favourite radio show of all-time 😊 Enjoy! Smooth Sailing: Yacht Trip To New Shores

Image
Roberto Nickson I believe that I’ve played one or two tracks earlier on, but all the other ones on this cloudcast are fresh as a sea breeze 😊 Enjoy this Smooth Sailing yacht trip to new shores! After his first album being released and having learned to sail along the southern coast of Spain, Reuben Vaun Smith spent a winter locked down in Yorkshire. Inspired by his summer memories and influenced by his own record collection, he started working on new material in the studio. The result is his new, jazz-funk oriented, album Sounds From The Workshop . To Live By The Sea is one of the tracks. Next up is a new show on Mellow Mellow FM ! Tracklist: Ed Mac – Margarita (2020) Reuben Vaun Smith – To Live By The Sea (2021) Super db – Open Line To Me (2021) Lamont Dozier – Scarlett O’Hara (1983) Doom Flamingo – Somebody (2021) Robben Ford – Tell That Girl (1983) Leslie Smith – It’s Something (1982) Rick Riso ‎– Gotta Have The Real Thing (1985) Frank Stallone – Once More Never Again (198

Eddy’s 80s Grooves Part 41 Mixing Magic

It’s Eighties time again! The electro soul track by Midnight Star is from their 1984 album Planetary Invasion : "The chart success of this album is credited to the production work of Reggie Calloway, the nucleus of the group, who was concurrently producing and writing songs for the Deele and Klymaxx. He and his brother Zino would go on to write and produce number one hits for Natalie Cole, LeVert, Teddy Pendergrass and Gladys Knight.” (Allmusic) Next week we are going to set sail once more! 😊 Tracklist: The System ‎– You Are In My System (1982) Doctor's Cat ‎– Feel The Drive (1983) Bar-Kays ‎– She Talks To Me With Her Body [Club Mix] (1982) Janet Jackson ‎– Say You Do [Special Remixed Version] (1982) Shirley Lites – Heat You Up (Melt You Down) (1983) Pokey Cold – Let Me Love You (1987) Cornelius Oliphant ‎– It's Your Turn To Cry (1986) Wally Badarou – Chief Inspector (Vine Street) (1985) Fatback – Is This The Future? Final Funky Chillout Hammock Session

Image
Pixabay Although autumn has officially started, it’s still warm in the Netherlands. This gives me the opportunity to upload one last funky chillout hammock session. Enjoy! Without any doubt Isaac Hayes helped shaping the music of the 1960s and 1970s. After laying the groundwork for the Memphis soul sound through his work with Stax-Volt Records as a producer and songwriter, Hayes began a highly successful solo career. When he released Theme From Shaft in 1971, he predated not only the disco movement, but also the evolution of rap. I chose to play a song from later in his career, Life's Mood II . Next up is part 41 of Eddy's 80s Grooves ! Tracklist: Carl Hudson & Galactic Gunslingers – It All Began Underwater [Soulpersona Mix] (2021) Four80East – Tikitango (2015) Motel Club – La Plage (2021) Till Brönner & Bob Jame s – On Vacation (2020) Weekend – Summerdays (1982) Isaac Hayes – Life's Mood II (1995) Dee Dee Sharp Gamble – See You Later (1980) Anvil Band – I’ll

Mellow Mellow FM Presents Fading Days Of Summer

Image
These days summer fades out just like disco faded away in the late 1970s. Donna Summer’s farewell salute to disco turned out to be Bad Girl s. In 1979 it was her final disco hit: “The gist of the song came about when one of Summer's secretaries was mistakenly harassed by police who thought she was a Sunset Boulevard prostitute. When Summer played the track for label head Neil Bogart, he thought it was too rock & roll for her and thought the song was ideal for labelmate Cher.” (Allmusic) Dutch producers and songwriters Bernard Oattes and Rob van Schaik initially called themselves The Limit and composed several great dance/pop tracks, for instance Love Take Over by Five Star. As a duo they released a full-length album in 1985, which contained the 1983 hit single Say Yeah with Gwen Guthrie on vocals and David Sanborn on saxophone. The song peaked at #17 on the UK Singles Chart, #34 on the Dutch Pop Chart and at #7 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart. For legal reasons they be

Smooth Sailing: Disco Shoes & Country Boots

Image
Unsplash Put on either your disco shoes or your country boots during this smooth sailing trip! 😊 This cloudcast is inspired by the new compilation album Country Funk Volume III 1975-1982 : “As the 1970s began to wane and the 1980s approached, the Country Funk pallet expanded to include disco beats, heavy Moog synth bass lines and more clavinet than you could shake a stick at.” In 1980 Amy Boersma, better known as Amy Holland, received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist after her debut self-titled album was released. The single from the LP,  How Do I Survive ,  went to #22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Some of the songs on the album were written by her husband Michael McDonald, such as Here In The Light and Show Me The Way Home .  The album is still a good example of a very successful country-pop cross-over. How Do I Survive and Strengthen My Love have become yacht rock classics. Gladys Knight & the Pips are featured in the very cool Disney+ documentary Summer Of Soul about t

Mellow Mellow FM Presents Lazy Days Of Summer

Image
Enjoy this new episode of Mellow Mellow FM ! Some of the songs on this cloudcast can be referred to as “quiet storm”. The genre (named after a Smokey Robinson song) is a smooth R&B radio format that was pioneered in the mid-1970s by Melvin Lindsey, while he was an intern at the Washington, D.C. radio station WHUR-FM. It was popular as a programming niche, mostly among Afro-Americans in the suburbs. The popularity of quiet storm started to fade around the early 1990s. Ben Fong-Torres of Rolling Stone defined quiet storm as: "a blend of pop, jazz fusion, and R&B ballads—all elegant and easy-flowing, like a flute of Veuve Clicquot champagne.” Last week Don Everly, one half of the Everly Brothers passed away. After their successes in the 1950s and 1960s, they went their separate ways in the 1970s. When brother Phil had finished his Star Spangled Springer album in 1973, he sent a copy of it to the Hollies. He thought it would be fun if the British band did a cover of one his

Soft Rock & Country Funk For Another Late Summer Drive

Image
Unsplash Let’s hit the road once more for an exclusive late summer drive! 😊 The track by Gary & Sandy is from the third part of the  compilation series Country Funk: “Volume III shows artists continuing to buck traditional country tropes and production while embracing modern soul, disco, and coked-up 80s synth-pop.” In 1980, You Might Need Somebody by American country singer and guitarist Turley Richards peaked at number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100. A year later, Randy Crawford covered the song for her album Secret Combination . It was the second single released from the album. Her version reached number eleven on the UK Singles Chart. In 1991, Joe Walsh put a rock version of You Might Need Somebody on his album Ordinary Average Guy . The most successful version of the song was released in 1997 by English singer Shola Ama. The single reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and became a top-10 hit in France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. It was additionally a top

Sunset Disco & Neo Boogie For A Late Summer Drive

Image
“Here in my car, I feel safest of all” (Gary Numan) The Secret Chord are Joakim Paulsson and Ida Trosell from Sweden. They get their inspiration from eighties synth, new wave and new romantics: “This is the soundtrack on the journey into a nostalgic past and an uncertain future. The music is meant to take you back in time to around 1984.” Take the wheel and enjoy some sunset disco and neo boogie on a late summer drive! Next up is a Mixcloud Exclusive . Smooth Sailing On A Luxurious Yacht Along The West Coast

Image
Unsplash  Let’s hire a yacht on a sunny day and enjoy the good life, like the so-called yuppies did back in the day! 😊 Not only a good view to enjoy, but also fertile ground for musicality is that of California. Think of The Beach Boys, the hit makers of late sixties Sunshine Pop, the Laurel Canyon singer/songwriters (James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Carly Simon, Carole King, etc.) and the L.A. yacht rock musicians. Nowadays there is a lively electro pop scene. I focused on the yacht rock heyday around 1980 and its global successors. When the West Coast wind blows, musical inspiration will undoubtedly follow! 😊 The story goes that Living Without Your Love by Dusty Springfield, recorded in L.A. and released in early 1979, was originally titled Never Trust a Man In A Rented Tuxedo . The cover art pictured Springfield coming out of a hotel room shower, only covering herself up with a towel and a man in a tuxedo leaving the room. However, these plans were cancelled and the album was rename

Although two of the songs are actually from the 1980s and one is even brand new (Silvertwin), they all could have been from the 1970s as well.  Enjoy this Mellow Mellow FM Mixcloud Exclusive for subscribers only ! Eddy’s 80s Grooves Part 40: Club Night!

Image
Unsplash I guess a club night in the 1980s must have sounded something like this! 😊 Again a track from Tanamur City , compiled by Indonesian DJ Munir Septiandry. He collected some of the nationwide club highlights of the 1980s: “…conjuring up a world of humid nights in packed discos, no-holds-barred genre blending, fun, fashion and funkiness of a kind never before seen in Southeast Asia… and seen rarely since.” The album is out on the 10th of September. Next week we are going to set sail again on a new Smooth Sailing boat trip! Tracklist: Beau Williams ‎– Give Me Up (1986) Roxi Drive – 1985 (2020) Oattes Van Schaik – Crimes Of Passion (1985) Grace Simon – Kenangan Asmara (1981) Odyssey ‎– (Joy) I Know It (1985) Five Star – The Slightest Touch (1987) Butch Sam & The Station Band ‎– Say That You Will (1984) Aurra – Nasty Disposition (1981) Alan Gorrie – The Girl Upstairs (1985) Jay Player – Love Is The Answer (1982) Horizon – Who Do You Love (1988) Mini Curry ‎– 100% (19

Mellow Mellow FM Presents Sunshine On Jazz-Pop Radio

Image
Unsplash Enjoy this new Mellow Mellow FM episode! Again some radio fragments from back in the day and retro music that sounds somewhere between jazz and pop. Dancing Away The Tears by Yola is from her brand new album Stand For Myself . While imported disco records dominated playlists during the 1980s in Indonesia, a local music scene had developed in parallel, with popular artists like Grace Simon, Chaseiro and Andi Meriem Matalatta. They embraced the use of synthesizers and drum machines, modern studio production and influences from western pop, rock, funk, boogie, disco, jazz, yacht rock as well as Japanese city pop. Songs from this very interesting Indonesian pop scene (1979-1991) will be available on Tanamur City , out on Cultures Of Soul next month. The track by The Brothers Johnson is originally from their 1981 Winners album (the first one without Quincy Jones). In The Way was written by three of the Toto guys and that’s why it’s on the new Too Slow To Disco compilation as

Funky Chilled Out Summer Sophisti-Pop

Image
Music that sounds best on warm days is without any doubt sophisti-pop, a genre that popped up during the mid-1980s in the UK. It had a light tone and contained elements of jazz, soul and pop. During those days artists often made extensive use of electronic keyboards, synthesizers and polished arrangements. Major influences were Roxy Music’s album Avalon and Bryan Ferry's mid-1980s solo albums.
