1975 The Year When Disco Became Mainstream

By late 1974, Billboard and Record World had introduced charts focusing on popular club tracks. On October 26 1974, Billboard launched the Disco Action chart which featured top plays from club dj's, who had to meet certain criteria. The following year became crucial in the history of disco music. It was the moment when club music that had been bubbling under on the east coast in the early part of the decade, finally reached both the radio stations and the record stores in high quantities. Disco became mainstream, in other words. It was the start of something big, a game changer in popular music.

If Everybody Hustle by Funky People sounds familiar in some way, then you are right, because it was composed by Randy Muller, an original member of Brass Construction, known for seventies classics such as Movin’ and Changin’. He went on to write and arrange disco hits for B.T. Express (string arrangement Peace Pipe) and Skyy (Call Me).

Some of the tracks can also be found on the new compilation album Disco75, out on Cherry Red Records.
