Mellow Mellow FM: Exclusive 70s AOR & Classic Rock

Image
Unsplash Turn on your car radio and drive to the Californian coast to enjoy this exclusive episode of Mellow Mellow FM that was made for road pleasure! 😊 Although it is used in several car commercials and has been dropped on countless compilation albums about driving, the song Driver’s Seat by Sniff ‘n’ The Tears is not about driving at all. It is about taking the driver’s seat, which means being in control, after a relationship, according to singer Paul Roberts. The first line is often misheard. The words are not “a little driving on a Saturday Night”, but “a little jiving on a Saturday Night”. This misconception led to a new interpretation of the lyrics and made it eventually a classic car song that everybody can sing along behind the wheel. Tracklist: Lion & The Lamb ‎– All For You (1978) Elton John & Kiki Dee – Don't Go Breaking My Heart (1976) Mark Williamson – I Need You (1979) Bread ‎– Baby I'm-A Want You (1972) Electric Light Orchestra ‎– Evil Woman (19

The Breeze: California Soul & Sunshine Pop

Brooke Olimpieri @FilthyMouthCreative Enjoy The Breeze, the ultimate sound of the West Coast! While living in New York City during the cold winter of 1963, John and Michelle Phillips from The Mamas and the Papas were missing sunny California, which inspired them to write California Dreamin’ . The song became a blueprint for the so-called California Sound, later renamed as Sunshine Pop. The 5th Dimension defined California Soul , when they released their version of the same titled Ashford & Simpson song in 1969 (a year before Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell did).  Influenced by the surf sound of the Beach Boys and the Californian folk rock scene at the time, sunshine pop was a mid-sixties mainstream pop style, typified by rich harmony vocals, lush orchestrations, and a happy-go-lucky mood. It was often mildly influenced by psychedelia and its light tone became the trademark of the Californian yacht rock sound the next decade. Brandy by Looking Glass, for instance, is a song that f

Smooth Sailing: Chillin’ From Coast To Coast

Image
Ivan Torres We're chilling from coast to coast this time on a new Smooth Sailing trip! The track by Kraak & Smaak is brand new: “Drenched in 70s Italian and French dolce vita-esque ambiences with a pinch of revamped Americana to it, the song makes for a direct portal to the happy days of psychedelic pop and weightless downtempo electronics.” ( Bandcamp )  Penny Goodwin's story is a fascinating one. 'Milwaukee's unsung queen of jazz' began singing in church with Al Jarreau. She then came to sing in mob owned clubs before moving on to clubs in Chicago and Caesar's Palace in Vegas. Her chief legacy however is her one album, Portrait Of A Gemini . Released in 1974, the LP features her own compositions mixed with covers by the likes of Marvin Gaye and Gill Scott Heron whilst featuring strings by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and jazz guitar legend Phil Upchurch.  Tracklist: Paul Seling – West Coast (2020) Rhye – Safeword (2021) El Chicano – Cha Chita (1973)

Flickr It’s time again for the retro sounds of Mellow Mellow FM ! 😊 You can hear old school radio fragments from WKZL, WABC and KFRC. Enjoy! Singer/songwriter Jimmie Spheeris was the son of a traveling carnival family who settled in Venice, California. After the death of his father, Spheeris moved to New York City to develop a songwriting career. He befriended Richie Havens, who introduced him to Columbia Records. The company subsequently signed him for a four-album deal. After the fourth LP Ports of The Heart , released in 1976, Spheeris could not get another contract. Only a 1980 single came out the following years. In the early morning of Independence Day 1984, just after finishing a new album, Spheeris died in a motorcycle accident.
