Funky & Jazzy Grooves From The Capitol Vaults

Again some funky & jazzy grooves from the Capitol and Blue Note vaults and a few tracks from affiliated labels, like Liberty, Stateside and United Artists. One of the tracks is one of the best love songs ever: 'Hey Laura' from Gregory Porter. It's a song about a man who can't accept the fact that his ex-girlfriend is seeing another guy. He goes to her house one night in an attempt to make her say that he's the only one... A very touching song! This is what Pat Les Stache wrote about his album 'Liquid spirit' that came out on Blue Note last month:

“This marks the vocalist's debut on Blue Note, which follows up his two previous GRAMMY-nominated releases Water (2010) and Be Good (2012). The album features a nice mix of heart-felt ballads like "No Love Dying", "Hey Laura", "Water Under Bridges" to uptempo groove-oriented cuts like "Movin'", "Free", "Musical Genocide", and my personal choice for "song of the year" in the title track "Liquid Spirit". The recording also features great renditions of Max Roach/ Abbey Lincoln's classic "Lonesome Lover", Ramsey Lewis' swingin' dancefloor hit "The "In" Crowd", as well as the beautiful standard "I Fall In Love Too Easily". Overall, this is really impressive record, building off the momentum that has followed the vocalist over the past few years, which could easily propel him to the same stardom that has recently shined on other young jazz artists like Esperanza Spalding and Robert Glasper. Porter truly speaks from the heart when he sings, and on Liquid Spirit, that passion flows through the music beautifully.”

Apart from the picture of Sharron Davies, there are two songs that inspired me to make this mix. One of them is a recent track from Duck Sauce. The repetition of the female vocals reminded me of Stars On 45 (I believe they both sampled 'Gotta Go Home' by Boney M). The other one is from Dutch singer Dee Dee. I heard ‘I put a spell on you’ on a recent episode of Tim Sweeney’s ‘Beats in space’. In the accompanying video she looks a little bit like a sex doll, but I love the song! I like the closing track from soul veterans the Drifters, but isn’t it strange to hear guys who were in their thirties at the time sing about schoolgirls? Pexels Look outside and watch the falling leaves and early sun downs: this is the AOR soundtrack to this year’s autumn by The Smooth Operators (Martijn Soetens and I) 😊 Enjoy some soft rock with a touch of soul! Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel are best known for their UK number one hit (Come Up And See Me) Make Me Smile in 1975. The song came from their album The Best Years Of Our Lives and was co-produced by then relatively unknown engineer Alan Parsons. Their pretty funky track White, White Dove was released a year later as the final single from their next LP Timeless Flight .
