Funk your groove, to quote contemporary R&B duo The APX! By the way, the songs from Tyra Levone and Alex Puddu on the tracklist are from the brand new compilation album Luxury Soul 2020 (terrible artwork, great tracks).

On his 1979 Master Of The Game album George Duke did not want to handle all of the lead vocals himself. His role was that of a producer/keyboardist/songwriter, who was more than happy to share the lead vocals with Lynn Davis, Josie James, and others. Davis became the centre of attention, when Duke featured her on his dancefloor filler I Want You For Myself, the extraordinary single that made Master Of The Game one of his best-selling albums.

What Cha' Gonna Do For Me is the brilliant third solo album by Chaka Khan​, former lead singer of funk band Rufus, which was released in 1981. Three singles came out from the LP: the Beatles "rework" We Can Work It Out (US R&B #34), the McCrarys cover Any Old Sunday (R&B #68) and the album's title track, which was recorded by the Average White Band a year earlier (R&B #1). On Billboard's charts the album reached #3 on R&B, #33 on Jazz, and #17 on Pop Albums. I chose to play the best track, I Know You, I Live You, which Chaka Khan co-wrote with producer Arif Mardin.

Apart from the picture of Sharron Davies, there are two songs that inspired me to make this mix. One of them is a recent track from Duck Sauce. The repetition of the female vocals reminded me of Stars On 45 (I believe they both sampled 'Gotta Go Home' by Boney M). The other one is from Dutch singer Dee Dee. I heard ‘I put a spell on you’ on a recent episode of Tim Sweeney’s ‘Beats in space’. In the accompanying video she looks a little bit like a sex doll, but I love the song! I like the closing track from soul veterans the Drifters, but isn’t it strange to hear guys who were in their thirties at the time sing about schoolgirls? Different times, I guess, when no one had heard of R. Kelly yet... One of my personal favourites is ‘Night time’ from Maggie MacNeal. Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel are best known for their UK number one hit (Come Up And See Me) Make Me Smile in 1975. The song came from their album The Best Years Of Our Lives and was co-produced by then relatively unknown engineer Alan Parsons. Their pretty funky track White, White Dove was released a year later as the final single from their next LP Timeless Flight .
