The Smooth Operators (Martijn Soetens and I) pay tribute to the heyday of the 1970s FM radio sound with our series Mellow Moods. Enjoy this new chapter: Mellow Valentine Moods!

Sadly two singers passed away recently: Maurice White, founder of Earth, Wind & Fire and Colin Vearncome aka Black. Maurce White passed away last Thursday, aged 74. He was one of the soul and funk pioneers in the 1970s. He died in L.A. after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was diagnosed in 1992 and his condition deteriorated in recent months. Maurice White started his musical career as a session drummer for legendary Chicago-based labels OKeh Records and Chess Records. He can be heard on records by Etta James, Fontella Bass, Billy Stewart and Ramsey Lewis. With the help of legendary producer Charles Stepney he created EWF and made it one of the supergroups of the 1970s. They combined high-caliber musicianship, a wide-ranging musical genre eclecticism, and multicultural spiritualism that included Biblical references. Best known hits are 'Shining star', 'Fantasy', 'Boogie wonderland', 'After the love has gone' and 'September'. Maurice White also worked with The Emotions and wrote 'Flowers' for them.

Singer Colin Vearncombe died recently as well. He made such beautiful songs in the 1980s and 1990s, like 'Wonderful Life', 'Sweetest Smile', 'Everything’s Coming Up Roses' and 'The Way She Was Before'. No one could sing better about dark and depressing days than the artist formally known as Black. He had been in critical condition in hospital in Ireland for two weeks, following a road traffic accident near Cork Airport.

Apart from the picture of Sharron Davies, there are two songs that inspired me to make this mix. One of them is a recent track from Duck Sauce. The repetition of the female vocals reminded me of Stars On 45 (I believe they both sampled 'Gotta Go Home' by Boney M). The other one is from Dutch singer Dee Dee. I heard ‘I put a spell on you’ on a recent episode of Tim Sweeney’s ‘Beats in space’. In the accompanying video she looks a little bit like a sex doll, but I love the song! I like the closing track from soul veterans the Drifters, but isn’t it strange to hear guys who were in their thirties at the time sing about schoolgirls? Different times, I guess, when no one had heard of R. Kelly yet... One of my personal favourites is ‘Night time’ from Maggie MacNeal. Pexels Look outside and watch the falling leaves and early sun downs: this is the AOR soundtrack to this year’s autumn by The Smooth Operators (Martijn Soetens and I) 😊 Enjoy some soft rock with a touch of soul! Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel are best known for their UK number one hit (Come Up And See Me) Make Me Smile in 1975. The song came from their album The Best Years Of Our Lives and was co-produced by then relatively unknown engineer Alan Parsons. Their pretty funky track White, White Dove was released a year later as the final single from their next LP Timeless Flight . The track was written and produced by Harley himself.  White, White Dov e was the second single from the album , after Black Or White had failed to chart. White, White Dove came out shortly after Timeless Flight , but despite the album's top 20 success in the UK, the single did not reach the UK top 50 either.
